If Freedom is going down to 3A, why couldn't they have left them in the NW 4A/3A??

    Fred,

That's a good question. I would have loved to see Freedom remain in the conference. I believe that the Freedom coaches and administration preferred to be in the Northwestern. I think that it was the Patton folks who made things difficult. I don't think they wanted to be in a conference with 4A schools. Because they objected the NCHSAA split the difference and sent them and Freedom into the SMAC. :spacecraft:

Others can give more details but that's my understanding of it.

    Thanks Hanger

G&G- I wonder why Patton's wants/needs had anything to do with Freedom's conference placement. The only thing I could see if that they wanted to keep Freedom and the school that split from it (Patton) in the same conference like they had East Burke and the school that split from them (Draughn) in the same conference.

Well I think that there was a desire to keep Freedom and Patton together so that they could maybe work out the schedule so that they could play each other at the end of the season. If they were in different conferences that probably wouldn't be possible. Plus, the SMAC needed more teams to be viable. Without the Burke schools, the SMAC would have only had five teams. The SMAC needed them more than the Northwestern did because the Northwestern already had 7 teams. So the NCHSAA will always prefer to have 7-team conferences rather than 9-team conferences. This is all just speculation, though. A Freedom fan could supply more details.

Something else I thought of. If Freedom and Patton were in different conference then, technically, they would not be obligated to play them in any sports. Maybe they said they wouldn't play them if they didn't come along. It would be stupid and self-defeating to play that little game but who knows? The Patton administration has already ruffled plenty of feathers during its short history. Again, just speculatin'. :cool4:

another thing to consider is the that with 5 teams there is more of a chance that a "4 win" team could finish 2nd or even win the conference and summarily screw up playoff seeding and such. (See Garinger at 4-6 with an auto berth).....not that the who system is effed up anyway.

the 4A schools in the NW3A-4A will breeze into the playoffs every year and may only need 1 conference win to do it (if i understand the system right)
