What things do D1 coaches look for in a pitcher

I mean how do they determine if they are a D1 or D2 pitcher etc...

Ah... yes... the one that the DI's don't take. It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that DII's get out and recruit and beat someone to the punch. That makes sense.

 

From my limited experiences, two words.....radar gun. If you can bring the heat, even if you don't know where it is going, D1 will take a chance.

 

They all look for the same

things in a pitcher and a player. I dont think a D2 coach goes to a game and says "I don't like that kid he is D1." College coaches recruit the players that they think can help them win. A D2 coach is going to go after the players he sees that he believes can play for him. Just because D1 schools like a player does not mean a D2 program can not or should not also recruit that player.

The fact is they recruit the pitchers every year that they believe are capable of pitching at the next level. They start out with an A list and may have to work down to the B list but they still go after them and they should. I think if more people would actually go out and watch some D1 D2 D3 and JUCO games they would have a better understanding of what is really out there.

The misconception is that these D2 schools are loaded with second class players that couldnt get on with a D1 school. The fact is many times these guys were late bloomers , a step slow coming out of hs , lacked some velo due to poor mechanics or lack of strength - coaching etc , were simply overlooked by the bigger schools for whatever reason , played in an area where there were a ton of talented players and were hidden gems , and many other reasons not related to talent.

I can assure you that any D2 program that does not recruit the best players it can get and sits back and takes the leftovers will never succeed. Many of these coaches work their butts off getting out there and finding the best arms they can and then developing them to the best of their ability. A D1 velo arm that cant pitch is a D1 player that will never pitch. And that same kid is not going to see the mound in a D2 game for the same reasons.
