What things do D1 coaches look for in a pitcher

Andro is the best pitching coach in NC. I'm not leaving any room to argue that point. he's got a slew of guys who can pitch at any school in the area at any level.

It is all about velocity. I don't have any way to sugar coat it. A couple of year ago I mentioned in a thread that I was at a pitchers workout with thirty coaches sitting behind the catchers and every coach was staring at his gun. I don't know if five guys there paid any attention to any thing else.

 

They are looking at movement, how much and where the ball breaks. Throw hard and flat see where it will end up. Not the say the velocity is not important. Just one part of a pitcher.

 

Velocity is something that can't be questioned. It can be verified with science. No human error. Judgement is less likely to be called into question if a decision is made based on a quantifiable reading. Velocity also has a major inherent quality........it allows more room for error. It's been proven time and time again. I personally think it's equally fun to watch a pitcher and a flame thrower.

 

Anybody else enjoy watching Jamie Moyer deal this year? He was spectacular, and with a low 80s fastball. Now anybody want to guess what Moyer's chances of making it to the show would be if he was a HS senior today?

 

Chances? He would have a problem to make some HS teams. What makes him unreal is his ability to throw his pitches to any spot whenever he wants to. His margin of error is very small, so he does what every pitching coach preaches....pitch to contact.

 

o'lefty, you are right on point with velocity......hey Ken shuey is a pretty good pitching coach when it comes to velocity! Agree?

 

From my experience being a 17 year old pitcher and going to play D2 baseball I have found there are two things D1 look for....Height and Velocity....if you thorow 90 but into the stands they will take a chance and look at you...but if you thorw 83 to 85 and paint corners and ahve extremely good offspeed your outta luck

 

mavs, your correct. D1 and upper D2, they're looking at upper 80's low 90's (we're talking about right handers). Lefties, mid to upper 80's. When they're recruiting a pitcher they bring the gun for a reason. Your pitching next year at the next level? D2? Congratulations!!! What school?

I've related this here before... my son, a mid to upper 80's rhp pitched in front of some of the NCSU staff the summer before his senior year with his hs summer team. His hs coach asked one of their coaches what he thought. He said they "would like to have him as a walk-on but they didn't give scholly money to rhp's that didn't throw 90+".

During the time my son was of recruiting age, I was intersted to watch who was watching the pitchers at showcase tournaments, and how they watched them. Often it was a couple or more young guys with guns. They would be shooting the breeze with each other and just writing down velos. I thought at the time that if I was the head coach at a school, I'd want to SEE the prospects pitch, not just look at a pitch chart with radar readings.
