I don't know if this has ever been discussed before, but being a High School coach, what can we do to help our players get recruited? I know most get their looks from college coaches from TB and I've been on that circuit, but can we in high school give any assistance at all. I know both college and high school seasons run together, but can we get coaches to come to school games? Do we make phone calls? Send e-mails? With the knowledge on this board, I would love to hear what some of you have to say.

No doubt that high school coaches can help their kids and it should be expected they help their kids. Coaches can and should call college coaches if they have a kid that is interested in playing college ball. My kid goes to Jordan Matthews..a small 1A school and we have had NCSU, Elon, Meridith, Pfeiffer, and Guilford college at some of our games. I am not sure if the coach had anything to do with those schools coming, but I do know he has contacted schools in the past about certain players.

Find a scorekeeper that is actually interested in and knowledgable about doing their job. Then make sure you report your stats and information. Call it in to the media, doesnt take that long and any exposure you get for your girls is great. IMO.

Def. find out which schools your girls are interested in and become another line of contact to them. If they play travel, contact that coach. Easier to have a combined effort than have opposite pulls.

this is all just my opinion, but things I wish would have happened when my daughter was playing.

    Hopefully this helps

    o
Sit down with your team and find out the ones interested in playing at the next level, get a list of schools from each one, help them prepare an e-mail to the college coaches and give them a reasonable amount of time to send that e-mail to the college coaches of their choice, of course copying you on the e-mails. They should give all your contact information to the colleges. You can then e-mail the coaches and give your evaluation and opinion on the player as a leader, a performer, a dedicated team player, a hustler, a clutch performer etc. You can make a difference since you know much more than her travel coach about an academic efforts, her ability to work with others, her family needs, etc.
I ask my players to list their HS coach and give contact information so college coaches can contact them. You seem to really care about your kids and I commend you for your efforts! You truly do and can make a difference!
You ask about college coaches attending HS games, it is tough for them to see many HS games due to limits on off campus visits but if you have a quality player or two and you let them know, they will come or get someone to come watch.
Best of luck to you, I wish you a great season!:two-cents:

....Nice post Abbey. You mentioned off campus visits, this might help: A college coach can come to all of your HS games, they cannot speak to the player or her parents more than 3 times when off the college campus. So mom and dad need to understand to stay away. Don't even ask a coach about the schools football team or maybe try to spear up a conversation, all while just being polite. 3 off campus "visits" period.

IMO, one thing that our schools in this area seem to lack is a middle school feeder program.
I know time is valuable for the HS coaches, but I think the middle school kids and their coaches would enjoy having the local HS coach come around from time to time.
HS coaches can bring an enthusiasm that might just keep the "more athletic" kids from joining their friends on the soccer field.

    Working together

One of the best articles I read on this subject was written by a high school coach from Texas and published in an NFCA Manual. But in it, the high school coach said that it was not until he started attending the showcase events with the travel teams that contained his players did he understand the recruiting game. I suggest you #1 make sure your players are on GOOD travel teams that play ASA and attend good college showcase events. And #2 that you go there as a spectator and hang out with the coaches and get to know them and talk with them about the players that they see that also play for you.

Then you will gain the trust of the college coaches, as this coach in Texas pointed out, so therefore when you call, they know who you are and are more willing to listen to what you have to say.

Also I would attend camps with your players in the summer and winter. Show an interest

But most of all, I would pick up the phone, call college coaches and ask them this same question. Don't rely on people in this site, ask the college coaches directly what they think you could do. That is what I did and it is the best decision I ever made.
