Will Fund

I had the privilege of coaching Will on Watauga's JV team for a year. I was then and continue to be amazed by everything he has fought through and had to deal with to continue to perform on the field. I will be hard pressed to have better memories at the field than a couple that come to mind from that season. First, when Coach Andy Fox put Will on deck with 2 outs in the final inning, I was just praying for the man in front of him to reach so Will could get an AB. I think that may have been the loudest I have ever heard a crowd cheer for a walk. It only got louder when Will roped a RBI single through the hole between short and 3rd. After the game, Will was the first one to joke about it, reminding us that he had hit it to the only person on the field that wouldn't be able to throw him out at first. The other one that sticks out in my mind was when we started him against a West Forsyth JV team that was in conversations on this site about being one of the best in the state, and I think undefeated at the time. Up to that point, Will had only pitched in 1 inning or less stints due to his endurance levels. Well, this time, Will pitched 4 1/3 innings I believe of shutout ball with the only threats being two balls that were absolutely crushed down the left field line that hit about halfway up the trees behind the cage at Watauga's field (I think one actually broke a branch haha). When I turned to see his reaction on both of them, he was on the mound laughing and smiling like nothing had happened. I wish I could see more pitchers with that kind of reaction to long strikes, but it takes something special to react like that rather than panic like most others would.

To make a long story short, I am proud to have had the chance to start my coaching career around somebody with that kind of resolve and outlook on life, and will do anything I can to help him continue to fight. Mark me down for $100 as well.
