Morganton - It's time for an inter-county confrontation on the court, as Freedom High travels to East Burke High today.
Junior varsity games start at 4:30 p.m. Varsity girls start at approximately 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
These games are for far more than Burke County bragging rights.
The Freedom Lady Patriots, who are loaded with talent, went undefeated until Jan. 9, when the team fell to South Caldwell High. Coach Amber Fox's girls lost again on Friday to McDowell High. All of a sudden, the Lady Patriots are in fourth place in the Northwestern 4A Conference. This is a must win for Freedom.
The East Burke Lady Cavaliers have stunned everyone with the team's steady play and the ability to stay cool under pressure. First-year coach Katie Gravel has her girls ripe with confidence, as the team sits in second place in the conference. This is a team that lost many stars to Draughn High and many expected to be conference cellar-dwellers. East Burke needs this win to remind everyone — including themselves — that they can compete with anyone and this is, at the least, where they deserve to be.
The Freedom boys team is sitting on top of the conference, but not comfortably. Coach Casey Rogers knows that complacency is the enemy. He knows what East Burke is capable of. He no doubt remembers Feb. 15, 2008, when Freedom came to Icard for the conference championship game and fell in overtime 69-67. This year's Patriots are fast and powerful. Freedom needs this win to tighten its grip on first place.
The East Burke boys' team has dropped some winnable games lately, including on Jan. 13 at Watauga High and on Jan. 6 at Alexander Central High.
East Burke sits at fourth in the conference. Coach Jon Hancock knows his Cavaliers are better than that, and they are. East Burke needs this win to get momentum going. Nothing will get that going like taking down the top team.

You would think the sports editor would know the records of the teams, The EB girls are tied for first and the EB boys are tied for third. Do they not have the conference standings there. All you have to do is look at the standings. That is why people make fun of the news herald. :toetap05::toetap05:

Just a random trivia question about the NW4A... When was the last time there was not an undefeated team halfway through the conference schedule? It may not be as long as I thought it was, but I can't remember a year. Kinda crazy with it being the last year of the conference all the teams are beating each other this year.
