No! We don't have that problem here in North Carolina.

    Yes We Do!

In the past few years there were players from Davie County HS who opted not to play HS ball (just travel) because of coaching and a couple transferred. There is another school near Charlotte that has the same issue. But usually the players find a way to transfer rather than not playing HS ball due to the reasons stated earlier.

This is happening more and more with schools out west. And with the growth of TB in NC and with the lack of quality high school coaching (there are some great HS coaches) and politics, we could see more opt out of HS ball and concentrate on training for the travel ball season.

There was one young lady last year who seriously considered not playing HS ball, but instead playing for a team in GA were the 16/18U TB season begins in March. (the HS softball is played in the fall.)

WOW!....if your statement had been made for TB instead of HS, you would get no arguement from me. If HS ball turns out to be anything like our experiences in TB we will definitely be spending our time doing other things.

    Remember When.....

Remember when softball was just a game, played by young girls and young ladies???? High school, travel ball, college ball, or Olympic team.....it's STILL just a game.

If you change teams, schools, and even HOMES (locations), because of your perceived shortcomings in softball coaches, parents, and other players, aren't you a bit off your rocker????? Games are supposed to be fun and enjoyed by young people. Play the game and have fun.

My sports career is LONG GONE.....many, many years ago in a galaxy far, far, away. However, my memories are wonderful. I didn't play college ball....didn't play on STATE CHAMPIONSHIP teams.....but, boy, did I have fun!

While everyone is making a BUSINESS out of a little girls' game, I hope they remember to have fun. You're only a kid for a little while. After that, the REAL world awaits.

And don't get me started on all the $$$$$$ spent for a partial softball scholarship.....that is a joke in and of itself.

Nobody needs to play HS softball in order to play at the next level. But that is not the purpose of playing HS. There is no other feeling one gets by competing for your school and your community. To play against your rivals is an intensity that is unmatched.

I realize that HS softball is very immature at certain schools. It is poorly coached and poorly supported; and I feel sorry for the players exposed to that environment. I won't go into the reasons for this, because it would take too long and the solutions are too varied. But the one's that do play for a competitive HS team, the pride displayed for their school, their teammates, their families and their community is something all HS's should strive to achieve. Because when you do, it is a feeling you will not get playing TB

This is probably not the thread to discuss this, but I brought this up to a parent, recently, that I respect. I didn't take a position with the question, I just wanted to see what he would say.

He said, the quality time spent with his son; family getting to know his friends; understanding that he knew where his son was at 1:00 in the morning, knowing he was not out partying with "other" friends. That they were learning life lessons without a terrific penalty for making mistakes. To enjoy his son's accomplishments and disappointments--to be able to laugh and cry with him. To travel to different areas with old and new friends and to be able to share in those experiences is not something that just benefitted his son, but his whole family. Even though his is not a wealthy family, he said they never sacrificed. He said sacrificing is giving up something they needed--he could not think of anything they sacrificed.

I know some people are sick of the "business" of travel ball and showcasing...and I understand those concerns and share many of them. But it still boils down to what a family wants to do. There are many choices for families and many paths to turn, but, ultimately, it comes down to your DD's talent....everything else are memories for the families--- and I don't know how to put a price tag on that

    Agree....

Braves, your comments are solid, as always. But, in my opinion, you are an anachronism, my friend........

By that, I think that you still believe that if your kid is truly good, you don't have to tell everyone about it. You don't falsify stats. You don't move from team to team to team to team because "everyone" has wronged your precious child. You believe in loyalty to your community and representing your community on the field, regardless of whether or not your child is the "star" of the team OR if the team has a chance at winning the state championship. And, most importantly, you believe in the honor of the "team concept."

Team sports are awesome.....always have been. But, more and more, they are becoming individual sports, with little to no regard for the coaching staffs, the organizers, or the teammates that make it all possible.

Maybe these tough ecomonic times will take us back to the basics, a bit.
    Would that be so bad?
