The silver lining to this would be the start up of leagues in late Feb or March vs April/June

    Sorry CMS

now you will know how the WSFC System is. You will be getting volleyball, basketball and maybe the "S" sport. There will get little if no funding from the school system. Your fans will become fat and lazy as many on these boards that make these type decisions. Good luck.

    My thoughts

Middle School sports are a complete afterthought in Mecklenburg County. The Observer says, no one on the board of education agrees with Dr Gormans idea. I say it still deserves some talk.

As you can imagine I come across middle school sports everyday with my paper. I deal with Union County and Mecklenburg County Schools and private schools. When choosing who does it best, who gives it the attention they deserve, Mecklenburg comes in dead last.

The Booster Club system in Union County is so far advanced on Mecklenburg county, that its not even funny. I say go ahead Dr Gorman, end middle school sports, but don't even think about doing it unless you grant Booster Clubs the right to pick up the ball and run with them.

To simply eliminate them in order to save 1.1 million dollars is very short sighted thought. I think everyone of us on this board can tell CMS how to save 1.1 million dollars a lot easier than eliminating school sports.

Charge a higher participation fee, do something, but dont eliminate middle school sports just to save 1.1 million dollars. Charge $2.00 admission to each game, that right there would cover your 1.1 million.

More to come in my paper on Wednesday....

    How dumb can we be?

--All middle school sports programs. Intramural programs would remain, but schools would no longer play each other in basketball, football and other sports.

This is just a crying shame!!!!

Attaboy...go get 'em. Maybe we can put some pressure to re-consider. No politician wants to buck the public's desire...especially if we can give them an alternative. It will be interesting to see how this plays out

I don't think there is such a thing as a middle school intramural program in CMS. They wanted to do it at my son's overcrowded middle school, to provide more opportunities, but it got rejected.

The more this idea gets tossed around and middle school sports get threatened, the more I say follow Union County and let the parents run it through the booster clubs. The folks I deal with at Weddington Middle and Marvin Ridge Middle are amazingly dedicated and they run great programs with more opportunities for the kids.

Lets give kids opportunities, not take them away. I have no doubt that if you turn it over to Booster Clubs like in Union County, Middle School sports will greatly improve and far more opportunities will be created. then they can take the 1.1 million dollars saved and put it to (((((fill in the blank))))))))

I thought CMS was having a problem hiring teachers and they are cutting 350 teacher jobs? Putting 40 kids in one classroom will only makes problems worse for CMS schools.

SouthCharlotteSports - I like your ideas, is your article in the paper today and if so which paper?

My newspaper is The South Charlotte Sports Report. It is also available online at www.southcharlottesports.com

My biggest problem with this whole idea is that if you take away, let us replace them via the booster club. Union County runs everything in middle schools through the booster club except for basketball and basketball cheerleading and their programs are very well run and attention is given to detail.

There seems to be some idea that got thrown out that the schools could keep intramural programs, only problem there is at my Middle School (one of the largest in the county) their isnt one and not one middle school family I know can tell me about the one at their school.

There is so much money wasted on other things, cut those things out, dont just strike a red mark through sports. Trust me, I dont need to get a 2 sided, colored menu on glossy paper sent home to me every month telling me that for every day of the week, the same stuff is being served..... Think about that expense, every elementary school kid gets one nine times a year. Someone is paid to design it, the printing cost, the delivery cost to each school, etc......

If it is the same stuff my son got in middle school. These are not menus these are public health warnings. But, that is another story. I do agree. MILLIONS are wasted over many things other than sports.
