What would you do if you went to an in-conference school to watch basketball and saw 25 girls practicing on the field with coaches, bats, balls, everything, during this dead period???????

I would do nothing. Dead periods are the worst thing to ever come into high school sports. If everyone would just ignore them maybe they would go away.

I totally agree. I never have understood why you punish kids who want to be practicing by saying only a couple of you can do it a day. Stupid rule

    Don't know about NC, but>>>>

I do not know about in NC, but in Georgia most would call the high school association in a heart beat. Rules are rules, where does it end? Next thing you know when you play them, they get 4 strikes instead of 3.

    The school would be fined.

There are rules I do not agree with, but as a leader of young people and a law abiding citizen, I feel obligated to go by them. Any person who just blantently breaks the rules in broad daylight on the site of a home basketball game when they know visiting parents and players will be there is asking and/or daring to be turned in if you ask me.

I was writing a post very similar to this so I'll just say I agree. The hard part, though, is when you have 2 or 3 kids extra show up for workouts that is "open to all, required of none" and tell them they can't participate. Getting 25 players to show up as mentioned in the beginning post would be a record for the schools I help with.

Someone should re-evaluate the effect of this rule on softball. It really doesn't seem to fit. Maybe some sports do need these kinds of restrictions but it sure seems to penalize the kids more than it benefits them.

    But officer...

What would happen if you went by a NC State Patrol Officer doing 95 mph
    on I-40......
    You would get busted...

The administration knows the rules, the coaches know the rules, and even the kids and their parents....

Disregarding a rule just because you don't agree with it is not the way...
If you feel that strongly about it, do something to change it..

Some say it is only wrong if you get caught.....well, they did...

    Tough lesson to learn

If the coach will do that...what else will they do?
Not a very good example to the kids..
AD at the school should also be held accountable

Anyone thinking it is ok to blatantly break a rule designed to
protect kids, and that is what this rule is for.....does not need to be involved in coaching.

Correct me if I'm wrong about off season work outs, but as long as they aren't working on any "sport specific" skills, can't you have all you want? But if you are working on softball skills training, then you're limited to 8.

Maybe they had one group of 8 working on softball and another group of 17 working on conditioning and agility. Then they rotated 8 players every 30 minutes. That would be legal, right? I hope it is as I know of a couple of schools that do it this way.

But a dead period is different. You can't even be on the same field with any of your players irregardless of what you are doing.

The way it was explained in Greensboro was you can only have 8. Not 2 or 3 shifts of 8. Eight total per day working on skills I think.

It seems technically you wouldn't be working with a team because before tryouts teams don't exist.
