The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated #8 California today 4-3. UNC had 17 year old freshman Constance Orr in the the circle and she kept the bears off balance all day.

Carolina was led at the plate today by Sam Murad with a pinch hit grand slam and Anna Roberts who went 3-3.

Carolina's defense was also strong. Brittany Robinson made a diving catch behind second base to save a run and the Tar Heels also gunned down 2 Cal players at the plate.

Great win over a west coast powerhouse team!

I don't think Constance Orr kept the Cal. Bears off balance. The Tar Heels defense saved Constance Orr time after time. If it was'nt a running or diving catch, it was a very hard hit ball at one of the Tar Heels. The Bears knocked out 12 hits and could have easily had 20 hits. The Tar Heels Defense kept the Bears off balance.

Wow, pretty harsh!, Whatever happened to hold the #8 team to two runs wether you give up 2 hits or 222 hits thats an awesome win from a freshman pitcher! Congrats to Constance and the Heels on the big win!

    Scoreboard!

I guess Trooper missed the fact that Orr is a freshman, there were 10 hits by California, not 12. Cal also left 9 on base. For some reason Cal couldn't get those runs in. Whether it be by good pitching or defense, does it really matter how you win?

Cal also made 2 errors (UNC none). How is it permissible for west coast teams to make errors against these lowly east coast teams?

Also,-easily could have had 20 hits? If it was that easy, then why didn't they do it?

    Scoreboard troop.

If its good pitching or good defense, then why are you attacking me. It was good defense that won the game. If it does'nt matter to you how you win then why are you offended by what I wrote.
Homer, I said nothing (nothing) where I put Constance Orr down. I am happy for her, she is a 17 yr old who is 3-0. There is a big difference in being 3-0 with an average of 15 K's per 7 innings or 3-0 where you are getting bailed out by your defense. She pitched well her first 2 wins, she did'nt pitch well today. She constantly got bailed out by her defense. The Tarheel defense was the deciding factor along with a Grand Slam today.

Where did I attack you...please share.

Did your daughter not get recruited by UNC and Orr did? Or maybe you lost a bet that a west coast couldn't lose to a east coast team?

But again if California could have easily had 20 hits, then why didn't they? Please explain............ It must not be that easy! I'll even give you this, why didn't California come up with say 15 hits, that should have been REALLY easy.

Orr had 2 strikeouts and dreary for california had 8. One of those 8 was a called 3rd strike on B. McKenney that actually hit the dirt. (Coach Papa could have been thrown out for that call) By the way, why did the california coach get tossed?

Something to think about as you pout about califonias loss- greg maddox doesn't always have a lot of strikeouts, so he will be in the hall of fame because his D always bailed him out?

Give it a rest troop. No one has said anything bad about your team. They just lost a game that they just KNEW they were going to win. california is a very good team from a tough conference. UNC must be pretty good as well. The ACC must also be getting better as NC state beat Oklahoma on Friday and didn't VA tech make it to the College World series last year?

    OK

Last time I checked softball was a team game and it takes 9 players on the field to get a win. If Constance was as bad as you say, I think Coach Papa would have pulled her! Obviously, her team mates stepped it up and helped her and it sounds like she kept them in the game as well. I coached Constance for several years and she works hard, she will make some mistakes but she somehow comes through when you need her with bat, glove, or on the mound. Maybe she did not have her best stuff but the Heels won 4-3 and you are correct made some great plays!
Now, I know you have a young daughter that plays the game and if someone posted as you did about her I bet you would be a little upset. Constance's Dad has read the boss and also her Mom, they have made no comments on the board or to anyone. They are knowledgeable softball people and understand their daughter may not have her best stuff at all times but she pitched the entire game, won 4-3, and the Heels beat a very good west coast team. A team that will probably be a force in the world series. Give the Heels, Constance, the coaching staff kudos and let them enjoy. You would want that if your daughter was pitching and won a big game even if she didn't have a peak performance. Trooper it is a free country and you can post anything you want within reason but just think a little about how you word the post and that the kids read this as well. Now you can add me to your attack plans.:N1pickme:

    She'll be fine

......Experience 101 for a freshman. My DD struck out looking today vs. #14 Houston. I'm just happy as hell that she was in the game.
    Go ACC!

Thank you for putting it into perspective......

I was at the game... great win for the Heels!
Constance was not as dominating as I have seen her... of course, I have never seen her against a PAC-10 team...

This was a team win... Kids stepped up when they were called on...
The Tarheel defense supported their pitcher.
What a great experience for Constance and her teammates... This will build confidence, when they might have the opportunity to play some one of this caliber again... maybe in May...in a much bigger tournament.

Kudos's to Coach Papa and Coach Smith for realizing a " coaching moment "
and allowing their outstanding freshman pitcher an opportunity to learn on the job...

    Great pressure swing Sam!
