It was clearly a mistake when umpire Larry "Hollywood" Norton took away Rebecca Reaves 2nd H.R. of the night when she hit the 2nd pitch off right hander of Concord high school pitcher that sent a linedrive over the L/F fence. The trajectory of the ball looked as though it bounced before the fence, but clearly more than 30 people said it cleared the fence, and was ruled a ground rule double. Second time up to bat there was no question as she rocked the 2nd pitch again over the R/C/F fence and was awarded a walk off. Also freshman Taylor Barrineau hit her first varsity H.R. and played a great game behind the plate taking over her sisters position as catcher from last year. Congrats to the Piedmont Panthers for their come back victory 8-7 over the Concord Spiders..

I have got to say, all the parents on Concords side, could not believe it either, it was clearly over, even the umpire in the field was calling it a HR, but he over-ruled him behind the plate. But great game, good luck this season panthers.

    Go Spiders!!

what? The umpire in the field who was actually closer and called it a homerun was overuled by the plate umpire? The plate ump needs to be suspended.

most of us have been saying this about hoollleeyywood for years, he's one of those bad umpires who wants the focus of the game on him, not the girls, and he sure as heck will make at least one controversial call during the game.

Hey Hooolleeyywood, how about going and umping baseball for a while and leave the softball behind.:clown7:

    Say it isn't so!

Tough break Rebeca and Dad, sounds like you got robbed!
Both of you know that after all is said, it is how you saw your performance that matters. Great Job Rebeca, keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!
PS. Guru, got two slightly used UNC-W pull-over wind breakers, real cheap!

I have been seeing references to "Hollywood" for a coupla years now. Where does he call? What association is he in? Is the Booking Agent aware of people's concerns? As a former Ump, we have always been taught, and I always believed, the best called games were the ones where you didn't even realize the Ump was there. I AM NOT for Umpire bashing, completely against it in most cases, but there has to be an avenue for communication somewhere. If someone is in it for their own glory or recognition, they need to get away from athletics completely. JMHO

I've seen him several times in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties and he is everything people are saying about him.
Surely something can be done about him:doh:
It's only the first week of the regular season and Hollywood strikes again!

    Oh And Another Thing---

What I forgot to mention was the field umpire gave her the homerun signal ,then Larry said it didn't go over instead that it bounced. How does the plate umpire over rule the field umpire when the field umpire is closer to the ball ???
