Rocky Mount better not take Wesleyan lightly. Wesleyan can flat play some baseball.

I will not be in attendance. But I will be sending my representative. Everybody smile if you see a camera pointed your way.

I will be watching some baseball though since I'll be at my son's middle school intra-squad game. First game of the season got weathered out.

Good luck to Ragsdale in Cary tommorrow.

    first game report

    Ragsdale 7
    Northern Nash 0

Congrats to Northern Nash - your odds of winning the 3A state championship just dramatically increased.

I don't have a lot of details but apparently David Coffey pitched a no hitter for Ragsdale. It's great to see that young man back after he struggled with a sore arm most of last season.

That's three games and three shutouts for Ragsdale. Pitching is good. Lets hope they keep hitting the ball.

Great game with only 1 error. Tate Parrish pitched 6 innings for SSS allowing one hit. Hunter Jones pitched the 7th to pick up the save. Josh Holloman led the game off with a homerun and had a big two out RBI single in the top of the seventh. Bryant Noteboom was 2-2(2B, RBI) on the day.

    Glorious Day

What could be better than perfect weather, great baseball, and watching a herd of pro scouts scamper from one field to the next between innings? Every scout on the East coast must have been there.

Just a few quick impressions of kids I saw:

Ben Fultz (Ragsdale 2010) - Why don't I hear more about him? His combination of bat speed and foot speed is rare. He hit a fly ball that looked routine until it landed about 390 feet later in dead center.

Logan Self (Wesleyan Christian 2009) - My second time seeing him. He does a lot of things well on a baseball field. Struck out Brian Goodwin on three pitches to start the game against Rocky Mount. Goodwin was impressive despite the slow start. He just glides to the ball.

David Coffey (Ragsdale) - What a thrill to watch him close out the no-hitter against Northern Nash. A moment he can tell his kids and grandkids about someday. Congratulations to Northern Nash. As Wossa pointed out they are assured a state title now.

Left-handers with bright futures - I really enjoyed watching Tyler Joyner, Tate Parrish, and Hobbs Johnson. They can all deal, and while command wasn't as sharp for some of them as it will be in a few weeks, their reputations are well-deserved.

Wil Myers (Wesleyan 2009) - So, that's what a 5-tool player looks like up close. I had heard of such creatures before, but can't remember seeing many in high school.

Enjoyed every minute of it. I was wondering how the teams were selected. The only suggestion for improving that would be to have one team from the Triangle in the event. It could help the gate, and since I live 10 minutes from the field, I would enjoy seeing some of the local boys.
