OK, here the gig, batter hits a shot into rightfield, hustles through the 1B bag as the RF attempts to throwout the batter at 1B. Runner clearly safe, incoming ball caroms off 1B towards dugout, now the runner breaks down, you know, the 'ol dropbend of the knees like do I go to 2B or walk back to
1B. Runner walks back to 1B, defense tags her as she makes no heated effort towards 2B easing back to 1B.
    Is she out? Why?
    Is she safe? Why?

After passing 1B, did she clearly abandon any effort to advance to 2B?

As I read it, my opinion is safe. No deliberate attempt towards second mentioned, "walked back to first".

It's all in the umpires opinion. If he believes the runner made any attempt towards 2nd (heated or not) then she is out. But if he didn't see it that way then he should have called her safe.

She was called out, but the umps overruled the call and she stayed at 1st.

What made the difference in the eyes of the other 2 umps?

......nice post! BTW, the opposing coach was looking to record his 700th win or something along those lines as I've read, but anyway, he freaked over the call, and bantered with the umps for 5 or 10 minutes. Well, his team and parents are from Conn. and they were vocal, to say the least. Right after the kid was called safe at 1st, Bam!, first pitch she steals 2nd. Here we go! The coaches, players and fans were chapped. Now we've got a party in the stands!
The runner is left stranded at 2nd to end the inning.
7th inning, same kid comes up to the plate, the coach hollers, "hey, this is the batter", what that meant, well, I don't know, but she roped a singled down the LF line. Then was caught stealing at 2nd. 1 out, score is 3-0 their way. We put 5 runs on the board with 7-8 hits in a row to wax their cocky northern ass. Pack 5 Hofstra 3

And BTW, the Fishman stayed out of the fuss the whole time.

.....because I thought she was out too!:lalala:
