Just heard that Northern Guilford beat a team from Reidsville yesterday 33 to 1 this is a new coach for Northern what do u think should be done about that.My DD's coach would stop at 15 and turn our girls around to bat from the other side of the plate.

    Wow, thats gotta sting.

While I haven't seen a game like this in person, the widest margin I've seen myself is 22-0.

I'm not sure what to do with the 30+ run scores, but you know how it is, what goes around comes around.

    Don't know the facts...

I don't know the facts but I would just hope the coach was doing everything he could to not run up the score on purpose. Have girls bat from other side, swing at everything (maybe pitcher was rolling the ball to the plate, maybe girls were batting lefty and slapping and getting hits), hold hits to a single, etc. At some point, you also have to treat it like a practice and work on some things.

You have to look at the other side also. It is humiliating to lose like that and sometimes the last thing you want is for the other team to make it look like they are actually trying to put you out of misery.

As you can tell, been on both sides. Agree with Runey, if it was on purpose, what comes around goes around...

Maybe they should up the mercy rule to 20 after 3 or 4 innings to end it there? Anyone ever seen a team come back from that far down?

Why not just let the girls hit so they don't hurt their averages and have them leave the base early so they get called out. Just a thought. First year coaches don't always know who the weak teams are.

    conference game?

I do not believe this was a conference game.

In the spirit of the game and the girls playing, there are avenues to take during a game that are more tactful than beating a team down. All coaches should have a firm foundation of building and promoting the sport of fastpitch softball for all involved. I can not imagine, having been on either team's side, that it would have been easy to leave the field with my head held high. These young ladies work hard every day to become better ball players, only to lose sight of their goal when scores like this are allowed to happen. Every school is not blessed with the pleasure of having depth and experience.

out of respect for THE game itself you don t make a mockery of IT by swinging from the other side of the plate and leaving base early! jmho

we have a conference game like this coming up next week. the other coaches and i have discussed what we will do in this situation, as we remember a team running the score up on us by 22 even after we asked them to slow it down. in a situation like this, sometimes your first thought is to do the same to someone else, but no one wins in that situation period. we figure we will start our top nine , and if we go up by ten, we will pull six (only have six on the bench)including our stud pitcher and let the rest play. i will have some work on slapping and bunting to try and make it a game and we will enforce the one hit, one base thing along with no stealing because in my mind, playing on a lower talented team and losing is one thing, but having your nose rubbed in it is entirely another. Amen!!!

This isn't a question of "sportsmanship", it's a question of "hurt feelings" and that is not what competitive sports are about. High school athletics are not "rec." league sports. Both teams should play to the best of their ability until the game is over after 7 innings or the mercy rule takes affect.

Yes, the team ahead should put their subs in. Yes they should refrain from steals or scoring on passed balls/wild pitches. But... at no time should the team ahead stop playing the game as it should be played.
