If a coach, parent or player is truly concerned about pitch counts then they need to examine an often overlooked culprit: excessive pitches thrown before each inning. IMHO if a pitcher is properly warmed up and would keep his arm warm between innings it is not necessary to throw 10-12 pitches before each inning starts. I see it often and those pitches are 50-75 pitches that are not counted. I like to see a pitcher throw a couple and call for the catcher to throw it down. Sometimes the umpire will control the number of warmup pitches, but often they do not. If you want a stronger arm in the late innings, avoid excessive warmup pitches each 1/2 inning.

Good point. Although they are supposed to throw 8 to warm up, many times the Umps want a water break or are not paying attention and allow a pitcher to exceed it. There is no point to throw just to throw. If you are warm after 4---then throw it down or take your time until the umpire is ready.

For those of you that have been watching the World Baseball Classic, those pro pitchers were on 75 pitch counts the first round,,, it went up to 85 for 2nd round,,, and I believe it goes up again around 100-110 for the finals this weekend. And keep in mind those are full grown developed bodies who are now doing this for a living, so their livelihood depends on them reporting to camp in shape in the first place,,, and yet they are STILL put on pitch counts so they dont' get ruined.

IMO, 115 pitches for a young teenager is entirely too many this time of the year.

Next thing you know he will be taking a sandwich break

If the umpire allows more than the rule book (5) per inning then he is either Obese and Lazy or just a Bad umpire.....the only excuse would be IF the umpire happens to spot a hottie in the stands!!!!!
