Recruited Walk-on Obligation?

Again, what makes this different than others is the lack of commitment from the schools. There is nothing binding. A coach will understand if a player that is not on scholarship decides to go somewhere else that gives him a better opportunity to play or a better academic challenge.

Although I'm sure this is not the case, I can share some stories of coaches that had invited walk on recruits---and the coach had no idea who the kid was. That happens more times than you wish.

If you keep in mind that college baseball is a business and decisions are made based on production and success...then there will be few surprises in most decisions that are made.

Unless there is a binding contract or a promise of one when the person is eligible to sign it, there are no ethical standards to be met between either party.

 

Is it reasonable to expect that a coach can still find scholarship money available for an 09 player. Is is routine for a coach to take money from the committed scholarship amounts of his current players or commmitted players who haven't arrived on campus yet? I guess I can answer my own gueston: Depends on how bad he wants that player.

 

While I get frustrated at times with her lack of baseball knowledge etc, it's times like these that remind me of one of the many reasons I married her: she's a heck of lot smarter than me on things that really matter.

 

One of the reasons I tell people that there can be gold at the end of the recruiting season is for the reason that you stated. Since scholarships are decided annually, a coach may decided to revoke someone's scholarship, reduce it or the player may have decided to quit baseball or they failed out of school.

All of these situations come up every year, but the coach never knows until the season plays out. A school X finds out that he may have 2-4 extra scholarships at the end of his school season that he did not know would be available. All of a sudden, a player they had interest in and still has not committed, may receive a windfall. Happens every spring and early summer.

My Daughter had her heart set on a particular school, and even a career path with a decision on a major, since she was a freshman in high school. She has played softball since she was nine with the drive and desire to play at the next level. Like most kids she wanted to be the stud at a major D1 program, and probably could have been at the school of her dreams had not the coach resigned. She was faced with the decision to accept the recruited walk-on offer from the new coach who had not really followed her like the previous one or accept scholarship offers from several other DII schools. She said "I can not see my self not playing softball in college, since softball is a part of my life". I told her that I would rather be a big fish in a little pond than a small fish in a larger one. She accepted the offer from a fantastic DII coach, with a great school and softball team. She signed her NIL back in November and is having a lot of fun this year with school and softball. She starts this fall at Wingate.

 

I have learned that it's not that they have a lack of baseball knowledge. It's because they feel we have a found an area that they will allow us to believe "we are knowledgeable."-----when in reality, they really do understand baseball, but are smarter than us, by making us believe they don't.

What a great school and a terrific program. I have a strong feeling she will be happier there than at a major D1 school. Wingate is outstanding!
