If a runner on base misses a base what is the procedure if the umpire did not call anything.

    As per rule book

If ball is still live a player can appeal it by touching the base and if the ball is dead then the coach can do a verbal appeal.....an umpire cannot call it until it has been appealed by the defensive team.

As usual, correct Stretchy.... last year our catcher saw a kid miss home ona HR, he got a ball from the ump and stepped on the plate, the ump called him out... I didnt know it had happened till the ump called out and the opposing coaches went beserk!!

I've always wondered in situations like this, if the umpire saw the batter miss the plate on the homerun, which he must have if he called the guy out on the appeal, why did the catcher have to appeal it? Why didn't the umpire make the call when he originally saw it?

Rule was changed for the good

Three years ago Umpires were required to call it when they saw it BUT the rule was changed for the good SO that no one umpire could take the game in his own hands making that call alone. Now if a coach or player see's it and appeals then at least everyone will know that at least 2 people saw him miss the bag when the umpire rings him up.

As the bench coach I always watch the reaction of the umpires on plays like that or tag ups on fly balls. The umpire will not indicate runner is safe if he doesn't tag home or misses a base. Usually it is the other runners on a home run who miss a bag because they are excited about the home run and looking back to watch it or the other runner. I watch for the umpires reaction and then appeal accordingly. Sometimes what looks like a tag from the dugout isn't up close.

    Rule number one.

    Don't miss the base.

    Sorry I just couldn't resist.

As for the ruling Id contest the "missed" base. Can't hurt. Let the blue suiters figure it out.
