Small Schools and Travel Ball Players

IMO, I think it comes down to not how many "A"'s a school may have in it's conference ranking, but the number of travel ball players any high school softball team has on its roster.

A perfect illustration of this is West Forsyth high School in Clemmons. They are one of the top 4A softball schools in NC. Earlier this year they were ranked in the top 10 in 4A.

So far this season they have lost to Starmount, Ledford and Forbush and all of these are 2A schools. I was told that every player on these 2A teams plays travel ball. Whereas at West Forsyth, they only have about half of their players who play TB.

The TB players at West come from some of the TB better teams in the state (Cardinals, Blues, Dazzle) where some (not all) of the TB players at smaller schools play on lesser known TB teams. My point here is that for HS ball, it really doesn't matter where you play TB, its just that these players need to play TB somewhere.

Just another way at looking at things.....................................

    Missed Point by gugu

I believe the point trying to be made was that sutton pitched for a 2A high school and she and her school defeated or played competitively with 3A and 4A schools. Not that she would be playing against 2A schools now...jeeez gugu quit trying to pick an argument every chance someone isn't as clear as you think they should be.

I believe ms. sutton was recruited by UNC and I doubt those coaches would have recruited her to play at that level if they didn't think should was only a 2A level pitcher.

In defense of Neutral Blue I must agree with him. The fact of the matter is the talent pool is usually deeper when you have 1400+ students as to when you have 500. Are there some really good 1A/2A schools? Absolutely, watched one last night(North Moore). Do they play the same level of competition week in and week out as a 3A/4A school? Seriously, I don't see how. NM pitcher had 3 K's last night and she was very talented. Next game she may go out and post 15K's against a team who has several good players and too many roster fillers. Yes her stats will look better. It also has alot to do with the stat keeper. They can't really fudge K's and home runs but, all the other stats are subject to how they get recorded. For example: last night a NM player hit a line shot to right field. Base hit? Absolutely! I'm willing to bet it went in the book as a triple. However our right fielder misplayed the ball and it got past her. Had she fielded it cleanly, that batter would have been held to a single.

I'll say this AGAIN. I am not saying that these 2A pitchers are not good pitchers and I'm not saying that their stats would not still be good. I'm not saying a 2A team can't beat a 4A team. AND I'm not saying they 2A team players can't go to D1 colleges. Geez. This thread is about those big STATS some are putting up. I'm also talking about hitting. I'm saying that I do not believe they would be able to have the same STATS playing against 4A schools than they would playing against 1A and 2A schools. If there is NO DIFFERENCE why classify them at all? Take some of these 1A/2A schools and put them in a 4A conference playing consistently against 4A teams and see how good their STATS are then. Go watch two 1A teams play then go watch 2 4A teams play and tell me you can't see the difference. Usually (not every time) after a 3A/4A team plays a 2A/1A team you will see the 3A/4A stats go up and the 2A/1A stats go down. You might not want to admit it but it is true.

FINALLY, someone who understands! There is no way 1A/2A schools play the same level of competition week in and week out as 3a/4A. This results in some of those big numbers they are putting up which can be deceptive. This thread is about STATS.

Do You Know Why There Are 1A,2A,3A,& 4A Schools ??

The schools designation is due to the population in the school. Small population smaller division it has nothing to do with the talent. Now if you are saying there is more kids to pick from that might give you the advantage in a 3A or 4A I would have to agree ... but East Surry 1A school beat N.Davidson 4A school in a scrimmage last February '08, because I was there watching it !! They out hit them and out played them !!
