This is a little different in my opinion. The State Games have made an effort not to interfere with travel ball and it looks like they have done that. If this doesn't interfere with the travel ball then why forbid it as a TB coach? Keep in mind that I agree with you on the TB/HS debate, but maybe not on this one issue.

    one more thing

If the travel coach in this case if true were for his team he would support the state games. They are through the week and they are great exposure, not to mention just one more thing for a prospective college player to put in her portfolio. So It sounds like this travel coach may be "liken me some me"

    the forbidden zone...
    just let them play....

I don't understand these playing issue's at all. What's a DD to do? She goes out and works her butt off developing a skill set playing anywhere she can (which MOST if not all the parents PAY FOR, including lessons and TB...YOU HEARING ME!), and all coaches want to do at every level is put limitations on when and where players can play. It's nuts. All they do is sit around a worry that they might lose some star player(s) and then have everyone find out what kind of coach they really are. What happens if DD crashes her new bicycle, or skateboard, or slips at the pool? I do not know who said it, but they were absolutely right when they said that softball doesn't develop character, it reveals it.

It is my understanding that on a travel team, the coach is working for the girls. The girls are not there for him. Does the coach pay fees to the parents? I don't think so.

The TB coach works at the leisure of the payors of the fees.

This will lead to the State High School Athletic Association putting a ban on high school players participating on a travel team during HS season.

I think so! Some TB coaches DO pay the fees When some parents cannot afford them. I have seen it first hand.

I am not agreeing with the TB coach or coaches that forbid players from playing in state tournaments, but some coaches do pay the fees and I know one coach who has paid the fees for his entire 16u team.

I know of at least two teams in our conference where the players are encouraged to play TB and HS and the coaches at the HS work to develop those players. I'm sure there are many other HS that do the same thing.
Some of those girls would not be at the level they're at if both TB and HS coaches didn't both help them. I get sick of hearing good HS coaches lumped in with some not so good ones. There are some not so good TB coaches also. As a matter of fact if they weren't such good recruiters they wouldn't have a good TB team. The TB organizations I have the most respect for are the ones who actually help their players develop. Not the ones who reap what others sow!!

I work with both TB and HS players. And the HS coaches I know don't put themselves on a pestal--whatever that is!

Just think if we had all the top players in the State Games from each region what a draw that would be. And when it was all said and done there would be a permanent record of it instead of a long forgotten TB tournament in the years to come. Anyone remember who won the 1998 Sports Plus tournament in Richmond or the Cardinals Classic in Greensboro in 1999?

Say what you want, twist it & bend it in any shape you like, there is no difference in a TB coach putting a rule in place just as most HS coach's put rules in place. If you feel that it's unfair you have the right to leave your TB team and find a different one. A HS coach will be quick to tell you if you can't abide by "his rules" then you might want to look else where.

Also, I'm sure you know what tournaments your DD has places first in but everyone else might not.

The State Games has been scheduled so as to not conflict with TB. Now in its third year, the Games is already a quality all-star event that the participants will remember for a lifetime. For a TB coach to prohibit a kid from trying out and playing is ridiculous. But rest assured, players who follow the advice of this kind of self-serving TB coach will probably not be missed at the Games.
