i was going to get on here and say how difficult of a job it is to select the state games team, how much time and effort and concern is spent trying to select the best team. about how NO coach wants to lose a game, so politics isn't really involved, but big al, braves and the rest beat me to it. a perfect situation....nah, but it is a pretty darn good one. i know i thoroughly enjoyed my 5 years involved with the state games. met alot of great players and kids during the process. did i choose some of the "wrong players" ?? probably (just like i probably do every year during tryouts for the high school team). but i can gauruntee, no coach is going to do it intentionally, like i said...no coach i have come across will pick someone if they don't think they will win for them. the coaches have as much pride (maybe sometimes more) in the outcome of the state games, as the players and parents do. :FO2DRMartiniHL:

    Pick a

Number. All players get a number. Then coach draws 20 at the tryout.

With the density of schools, quality players and sheer mass population in the Western part of the state, I can not imagine how difficult a task it must be to select a teamof 20 at a tryout. State games are a wonderful thing over all, but maybe it's time to tweak it a little and redo the regions (add or redraw) to adjust for modern day geography (numbers of new schools, additiional population). I am sure there are players each year who feel slighted by not making it, but when going up against that many players at a tryout, one would have to assume coaches are looking for the little things that make a difference.

It's obviously an issue, because it becomes a very hot topic this time of year, especially out West.

Good point. Just the density of a population center will by percentages poduce a great number of better that average players. It is time to look at those regions or the recommendation process from the players coaches. Not sure but is there any limit to player recommended by their coach? Maybe realign and add two. Then have two teams each East & West Senior teams.

seems to me that one concern that would be a motivating factor in changing the number of regions would be the number of kids that don't even bother to go to the tryouts due to their belief that they won't have a chance. Before ya'll react let me give you a real example...

Baseball and softball players from Chatham County. Chatham kind of sticks out of the east side of region 5. The three high schools are 1A(2) and 2A, with the 2A being more of a Triangle school. The odds of a region 5 coach hearing about, much less seeing a player from one of these schools has been remote historically. The conferences they play in are mostly made up of teams that fall into regions other than 5 and media coverage for these teams is poor. Even the local, once a week, "fish wrap" didn't report on the 2A school's softball team repeating as regular season champs this year! I have talked with several players in both softball and baseball who didn't bother to go to the tryouts because they believed it was a waste of their time and that they wouldn't even be considered. Are they all "state game material"? No. But without trying out no one will really know for sure.

The former head baseball coach at the 2A school used to tell his players that they could tryout if they wanted, but don't expect to make it. I always thought he was being rather cynical, but now I know he was being realistic. Around thirty years of coaching at this school had taught him that very few of his players would ever be considered.

What could improve the process? One idea may be to base the regions around conferences verses counties. At least this way there would be more "eyes" on the players during the season. Each region's "tryout committee" would have at least one coach from each conference represented... kinda like area scouts that report to the regional scout in pro ball.

Another idea would be to have the region head coaches be made up of assistant coaches from North Carolina colleges, as well as possibly some pro scouts from the state. There may be some rules that would need tweaking, but this would definitely put qualified evaluators out there picking the teams.

Anyway, these are just some random ideas to think about... Don't forget to kiss your momma today!

    Agree

Plate, I agree that there should be more opportunity for the seniors. The state games are a great chance for colleges to find players to fill out their rosters for the upcoming fall and with just 40 or so kids now involved on the East-West teams there ain't many on those rosters that haven't signed already.

Here's an idea... have a four team tournament in both the east and the west. Teams would have a max roster of say 14 players. The winning coach would then take his team, along with maybe six players he picks up from the other three teams in his region. They would then go and play the East-West game as it is set up now. Recruiters would get the opportunity to put their eyes on more players this way and maybe find a kid that could fill a need that they have.

    State Games

The state games tryouts will always be a hot topic. There will be ball players not chosen who are very good and that is a shame. Region six is so huge there is no way for players to be happy, regardless of the reason for not being chosen. Mecklenburg county is so big with ? so many public and private schools. Why not realign the regions maybe with Cabbarus, Rowan and Union county a region or what ever you want to name it and Mecklenburg, Gastonia, and Cleveland county together. it will not solve the problem but maybe give more players opportunities.

A coach may nominate up to 5 to tryout. No more than 3 from any one team can be picked to play.

Does anyone have any updates as to how todays tryout went? Who stood out?
