    ouch

that sucks cause i love double/triple/quad headers where everyone plays in the same location.

and with softball going to more and more lighted fields its becoming a choice between softball and baseball and i loves em both.

so what sports would have a chance to survive? i know NG has had soccer games where there werent enough paying fans to pay the officials.

and how does title IX play into this?

does the pay to play make the teams basically the same as travel clubs?

with the possible ruling that if your school doesnt offfer a sport you can play at a neighboring school that has it for that sport and your home school for other sports mean say 3 schools come together and cut say soccer at 2 of them and combine the 3 teams into 1? or maybe 2 schools - north and east one cancels one sport and one a different one and share athletes in those?

As I understand it in Union County, NC travel for non-conference will be limited to adjoining counties in the 2009-2010 school year.

gaston county limited to 20 mile radius from school for all non conference.

golf and swimming are not looking good, most jv sports may be gone, soccer doesnt make enough to pay for itself, which leaves football, baseball, softball and basketball. track is questionable right now.

title IX doest come into play when other sports are being eliminated due to financial restrictions. both boys and girls sports are being eliminated.

    plain sucks doesnt it??????:saywhat:

Going back to the conf. tournament issue....another example of why they're played is Watauga. They were seeded 6th in the tourney. They defeated the #3 seed, then the # 2 seed. They lost to Alexander tonight, but if they had pulled off the upset, they would get the 2 seed and everyone else dropped down. The girls were fired up and played well throughout the tournament and had the opportunity to play for the tournament championship tonight, which no other Watauga team had ever done in fastpitch.

    understood but

not directed to Watauga, could be many others. If it's understood before the season that there would be no end of season conf. tournament, then the regular season may take on even more importance and competitive play if teams really want to make the playoffs. same mindset as college football; the playoffs start the first game of the season.

I always like the idea of teams getting a second chance. If you win finish #1 during the regular season it's an automatic #1 in the STATES. But, everyone else gets new life at getting in through the conference tournament championship, like in basketball. JMHO.

    conference tounanents

I like the conference tounaments although MSEC has not had one for ages, why not eliminate the state playoff games back to the top three and play conference tounaments. A lot cheaper for conference teams to meet than sending fourth and fifth seeded teams from one end of state to border of another. Of course the Gods at NCAA wont hear of this because they want get as many $$$. Why do you think they started to give more football playoffs. I don"t think they even consider what it cost the local schools when they decide the brackets.

Up north here, league championships are decided by regular season league play.

All HS teams then participate in the state tournament. It starts with sectional games, then districts, then regionals, and finally the State tournament, the final 4 teams from each division. 2 games in each round to advance. It works well. There are some surprises in the first 2 rounds where a much lower seed will come up and take down a higher seed.

In our Division 3 district, there are 29 teams. The coaches turn in their seeding and then they are all tallied. The seeds are announced but then comes the twist that we have.

Starting with the #1 seed, the coach for that team gets to select which slot he/she wants. So, a #2 seed can immediately go after a #1 seed if he/she wishes. There are 6 first round byes in our district and usually, the higher seeds will take those. It is a little different but very interesting also.

Why have a conf. tournament? It's fun!!! Do we need more reasons? Who cares if it means anything other than a conference tournament just play for fun. That is what high school sports should be about

Most of those who played or watched the Greater Neuse River Tournament know why!

This was a very good tournament. Most of the games were exciting to watch. One team came back from a 6-run deficit in the final inning and won by one run. There were a few other very close games.

When all was said and done Garner and West Johnston battled to a 3-2 finish. Garner came away with the win after being down 2-0.

Congratulations to the Garner girls; they never give up! Congratulations to West who also never gives up! They are two tough teams! There's quite a rivalry there but their sportsmanship is outstanding!!

    Nice trophy!!

Good luck to both teams in the State playoffs!!
