Ok... since I have just one year left of watching my girls play HS ball I wanted to throw this out for discussion.. not that it will make anything happen just to hear the pros and the cons.

Why not move HS softball to the fall? The weather is generally much nicer... fewer rain outs, better gate because its not cold. You could move volleyball to the spring which would help its gate as well because the gym wouldnt be as hot.

Seems like a money saver as well in tight times.

What are the negatives, if any? Thoughts? Those in Charlotte have had some experience with this in middle school ball I believe.

Are there any examples of any states that hold their softball season in the fall?
Ca, Tx, etc hold theirs in the spring. How would that affect national rankings?

btw... Softball does make more sense in the fall. The girls are usually at the top of their game after just coming off a season of travel ball, all the players are available, college coaches might be more available to watch games.... but spring is the traditional season for the sport and the momentum would be difficult to break.

What's this volleyball thing you speak of?

You left out girls soccer. It's kind of a no win situation-be it fall or spring.
Either way about it-it effects the quality of the team and revenue towards the school...How many times have you read (when softball season starts) that "we'll have the rest of our team after basketball playoff's over"...Why not start basketball season 3 weeks earlier?

We have fall HS ball in Georgia and it is awesome. I've lived in both North Carolina and Georgia. It's amazing how many college scouts attend games in the fall, especially the state tournament in Columbus. It is almost like a who's who amongst colleges represented.

small white ball, smaller than a basketball and bigger than a softball, hit over a net and is generally used as a conditioning exercise for softball (lol)......we discuss this every year, and it generally comes down to moving another sport from fall to spring and volleyball is the candidate as it is indoors and not affected by weather....but it still aint gonna happen.

    fall ball

since middle school here plays in the fall (since most share fields with baseball) fall hs softball seems right. might also help soccer.

even moving volleyball to spring isnt an answer though. but it would be best if its not same as softball either way.

not sure what would help soccer. move guys to spring? play both same day either same site or opposite sites?

pushing the start of basketball earlier might help baseball/softball but it hurts basketball tremendously - - FOOTBALL lasts so long that basketball NOW is without people several weeks into the season. should we push football farther into the heat of summer (uh NO!!) only real option there would be fewer games but there goes the one gate most schools rely on to pay for everything else.

year round school so everything can be spread out more?

i would like to see softball and baseball on differetn days though - especially since they dont travell together anyway. and open saturday to regular scheduled games. bring 4 teams together and they could get three games in each in a day easily.

good point on football jj. but as far as softball, it would be more beneficial to switch middle school sports to counter a hs move. an issue that was raised was that if run concurrent, there would be a shortage of umpires (i believe we have a shortage of umps anyway based on what i saw this year, but thats another arguement).

hs sports should have precidence over ms sports period. we dont share our fields with anyone, and i dont think that this happens in our conference.

plain and simple, most baseball programs dont want the move to fall as it would conflict and compete with the revenue from football and as said by jj, a lot of baseball players also play football. of course, we would have that problem also, as our catcher is now the kicker for football (awesome it is).

the only way that this would happen would be to disassociate ourselves from the baseball time frame and go it alone with middle school switching their softball season also.

it makes sense all around for us to alter our time frame of play, but the down side of this is that the playoffs and finals would probably be played in sub 50 degree weather and you know what that does to most bats, not to mention players. that means we would finish our season in mid october with the state finals being somewhere in the first week or two of november. i could be a week off, as we would lose the week of easter as an off week, but its pretty close.

switching with volleyball shouldnt be an issue, as we use the same ref's as they do, and softball would be over just as basketball starts. basketball would be over as volleyball starts.

now, with that in mind, who's gonna convince raleigh to make the change.

Pop's, ya got any ideas or opinions about this issue????
