    Hips

Hey guys, I just thought I would give you my opion on lineal vs rotational, frist of all I am a legs and hips guy, I belive that all quality swings start in the lower half. My thoughts are this; If you stride with your lead foot and your hips travel foward over your front knee then you have become lineal, if you stride and your hips leak say 4-6" and rotate against a stiff front leg then your rotational. If you define the two stlyes with the path of the hands then look at where the ball is being contacted, lineal would be out in front of the knee( front knee), and rotational would be at about the hip area to the front knee, Think Ichiro Suzuki lineal, and Barry Bonds rotational. That is the way I see the difference in the two styles. I would also add that the pitch plane in softball makes it easier to have more success as a lineal hitter only because rotational hitters usally sit to hit and will only be able to hit the lower pitches well. I like for my hitters to employe the weight transfer from back to front but at a few inches only not more than 6" any more than that and were in trouble of the head moving and really causing problems, once the stride foot has made contact with the ground the front leg stiffens to keep the hips from leaking foward and then the hips rotate against the front leg. You can call it what you want but it is a little of both worlds IMO.

    Let's not forget!!!

Although I agree with most of the views that have been posted on this subject, we need to remember that if your DD is past the age of 12, and has been playing this game long before that, teaching is pretty much gone. Not every player can do one or the other or even a combination of the two. What has to happen, if you really want to help her, is to put her in a cage, set up a video camera, videotape her taking numerous swings. Later, sit down and analyze what you see, and see what you can "TWEAK" that will work for her. Swings, like a lot of other things in this sport, vary from player to player depending on height, body style and shape, bat speed, hand eye coordination. A lot of what happens with any particular hitter, including the major leaguers that were mentioned, is usually simple factors brought on by different things. Frustration can lead to impatients, fatigue can lead to head movement, etc. Use the "KISS" method and keep in mind, too much information can be as upsetting as not enough. Have fun.

I would agree that small tweaks are what is needed to get hitter on track, hitters do become overwhelmed by to much info. I will however disagree That is one thing using the swing right program that you can really see is that hitters that appear to be very different but when breaking it down it is amazing how alike they are. I am going as far as talking about angles of the bat, elbows, weight transfer, and were contact point is at.

    hitting software convinced me

G2G, I agree that the best hitters look the same at/around contact. While at a coaches' clinic in Tucson, Don Slaught was showing the RightView software and he had a bunch of major leaguers and some of the big NCAA softball hitters loaded in the software. He stated that near contact, all great hitters look the same. He had to show me to convince me. Watching these videos side-by-side was amazing. They all started in a different stance, and they didn't always finish the same, but at the point in the swing where they were on plane and approaching contact, things lined up among the hitters. For that crucial fraction of a second, every single hitter looked nearly identical. It was truly eye-opening. It definitely changed the way I coach hitting.

    Success

You can be a successful hitter whether you are linear or rotational. This should never be a contest of which is better, right or wrong. It should be about making hitters better. You need to look a the individual hitter, evaluate their tools, and discuss their goals as a hitter, then help them progress and get better.
