Just like a batter, I think the ump is better off keeping his/her head still. One solution would be Siamese twins.

    digital umps

All batters have digital sensors monitored by the home plate, when batting that will set the strike zone. No matter where the batter is in the box. Ump does not have to worry about balls and strikes. Just the other stuff. will this work???????

Seriously, I don't think we are too far away from other means of making the game more consistent and fair to all. Look how far nascar has come in electronic timing. Transponders maybe?

No more coaches ejected or fans upset. No more umps threaten to clear the dugouts or stands. Where's the fun

Inside-outside would be a piece of cake to automate... the up and down would be tough since it is variable based on the batter. I guess you could register each batter's official vertical strikezone and call up that batter... BUT baseball is still human called after 100 years... it might be hard to justify.

How about the Chief umpire reviewing the video tape after the game and reaming the plate umpire on bad calls or banning them if they have too many bad calls. 3 balls outside is a pitchers dream but makes it hard on the batter.

Now that last paragraph sounds like you're on to something. Have umpires periodically watch games they've called. Have their peers there to critique their calls. I think we would see major improvement and consistency in the calls in a short period of time. That is something that should be seriously considered by heads of umpiring organizations as a routine part of the training of their people.

Major League BB is already doing this. When reviewing game tape of umps. That's how the best umps get to do playoff games and WS games. Same for NFL refs.

I don't think anyone would really like taking the 'human' aspect out of the game. It is part of the game. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't but I don't want some computer calling balls and strikes. I work with computers all day and trust me when I say, they are only as good as the folks writing the code. Not to mention as soon as someone comes up with it, there will be a hacker selling a cell phone program to 'dads' that will let them change their daughters strike zone! Then you have to deal with folks jacking around with the sensors in home plate and on and on. It wouldn't be any better...

Come to think of it they've already done that. They make 'em for Wii, Xbox, Playstation . . .

    Wii.......all the way home

Wii ...... not as much fun as the real thing. No more TB or HS or showcase ball. Just set at home and play the Yankees or Braves or Red Sox every night......
