Exactly--"reasonable effort" are the key words in determining most plays.

This thread could go on for days and never come to the same conclusion. His attempt at the guy at third throws it into the FC column.
Talk about hits to errors go to some of the minor league games, many hits logged when in HS they are errors.

:iagree: "if it is YOUR son" does cloudy many decisions in scorekeeping...

But the guy "layed out" down the line. Perhaps his best chance for an out was an attempt at 3rd and when he saw that wasn't going to happen made the throw to first, anyway. The judgement needs to be if the batter would have beaten the throw without the attemp. I'd say if the 3rd baseman layed out for the ball, gathered himself to his feet and made a tremendous throw, it would have been a web-gem play--hard to score that a FC...unless it was Stretchy running, then the fielder could have eaten a hot dog during the play and still got him out.

This sounds like a FC, but I've seen plays like this where the 3rd baseman would not have gotten the runner at 1st regardless after diving for the ball. A left-handed batter with speed that hits one down the 3rd base line could be a hard play anyway, even if the 3rd baseman doesn't have to dive for the ball. It really depends on the situation & judgement of the official scorer.

    Proves the point...

These exchanges demonstrate how difficult it is to score a baseball game and how variable the interpretations are. Braves quotes the rulebook....and that is where most answers are, but most scorers have never gotten close to a rulebook. I think it important to be fair to all involved when the scorer makes his/her judgement. Fair to the hitter, the pitcher, and the fielder to the best of the scorer's ability.

This one might send me to look for a website on common scoring mistakes. I did see on a similar site that the pitcher who has a no-hitter with two outs and a runner on first (via walk) and then gives up the most routine ground ball imaginable to the second baseman who can't field it for the last out of the game because the ball strikes the runner for the final out....is credited with a one-hitter.

No joke! I presume any batter who hits the ball that strikes the runner is credited with a hit if he arrives at first safely after the deflection.

I love this thread for a different reason. I like to see discussions going on--even heated one's at times....and done so in a civil way. We're baseball people, we all love the game. I may not agree with someone's opinion, but I will respect their opinion. As long as it's not an attack on someone in particular.

Let me give you an example. The most polarizing subject is
recruiting/transfers. I don't mind discussing this on the board, but when actual names are used or a particular coach or school is mentioned, I can't allow that. But the topic will promote heated discussions and there is nothing wrong with that.

Remember, I used that as an example, so please don't feel I'm encouraging you to start a new thread on that topic.

    FC or Hit?

Yes- its great getting all opinions-
Here is another one. Runner on 1st- ball hit sharply to pitcher, who makes an attempt to field the ball- goes off his glove and rolls towards SS, who attempts to make a play on the guy at 2nd, and doesnt. Everybody safe. Hit or FC? This happened in a game last year!:schlacht:

Let's make a deal with Monty Hall

I know a town down east where recruiting and transferring is done on napkins at the local burger joint.........BUT since I am not allowed to mention names or schools I am going to keep the information locked in my safety deposit box at the bank.
