It is my understanding that if a person is a coach or an assistant coach at a HS and is a coach or an assistant coach of a travel ball team there can be NO working with any girl from that HS during the Dead period (August 1 thru September 1 and November 2 thru December 1) There are some big showcase tourneys that fall in this period. Does this apply to tourneys out of state ? What to do? Give up coaching at the HS? Tell the player she cannot play during August and November ? I've got some girls that their hopes of playing at the next level are depending on being seen at these tourneys. There are alot of coaches out there that are in the same boat as I am in, how are you handling this? What are the penalties ? AS usual it is the kid that is being hurt by these rules

It's not an in or out of state thing, its no involvement period. in situations like this, the coach needs to take a back seat and sit in the bleachers for these tournaments. no use of endangering eligibility of a player for one lousey tournament.

There is an exception for baseball/softball coaches during the summer months. Now, when school starts I would say that all bets are off. You need to check with the NCHSAA to find out what exactly the baseball/softball exception is.

HS dead periods! Probabally one of the worst rules in high school athletics now days. It may have had its time and place in the past but no place for it now. August is one of the best months to play TB and it limits some of the teams. I would at least like to see the rule changed to make it alright for assistant coaches as many of the high school assistants are TB coaches first but do a great deal of good helping at their local high school. The only ones being hurt by dead periods are the kids.
I do know in legion ball the high school coach can still coach during the dead periods

Just a comment and i have no real idea, I just question how a school district can dictate what a coach does while school is not in session. I agree, once school begins, a different subject completely. I mean, the nationals are going on right now, tomorrow is the first, you cant tell me all those coaches that coach HS have to now go sit down somewhere. doesnt make any sense at all.

And Cheeze, you have offered a ton of great info on this forum and would agree with almost everything you have said, but I gotta disagree on your statement. At the national level, that coach and their succes with a team could mean the difference of one extra look. You cant just go ask them to sit down tomorrow morning.

the other side of that coin, if school isnt even in during this time, why did they come up with this date. or is that simply a beginning of the month instead of saying aug 19 or 20 or whatever.

    curious indeedy.

    Prevention!!!

This rule is supposed to prevent coaches from keeping players from trying out for other sports at school, i.e. volleyball starting early August and basketball in early November.

From my understanding the dead period is to not allow a SB or BB coach to put extra pressure on an athlete to not try out for other sports which begin practices during these months. Also I think that if a tournament starts during the month of July and continues into the 1st couple of days of August that the coach can continue to coach during that tournament.

Maybe they should take the same approach as we do in softball; we let kids who play basketball tryout after basketball season ends. More often than not we have to wait after our regular tryouts to allow those kids to tryout.

I could see a week at a time maybe but not a full month. Things move faster nowadays.

I am in favor of the open to all, required of none rule, however. That should resolve the other issues anyway.

    Agreed!!

We go through all that stuff too Phreak...I had the volleyball coach call a mandatory meeting for ANY girl that thought she would play volleyball the next year...during one or our practices for a third round playoff game one year!!!??? Total lack of respect for the softball program.
