There is NO exception for softball I spoke with Carolyn Shannonhouse (NCHSAA) about it a HS coach cannot instruct a girl on the HS team during any dead period. The only allowance as I understand it is if it is the coaches DD. and during the summer only.

I called NCHSAA and was told the beginning dates were the first day of fall sports practice (August 1 )till September 1 and the first day of winter sports practice (November 2 )till December 1. No exceptions . This affects the Cardinals Late Summer Showcase 8-14 thru 16 and the WFC Early Signing Showcase in Myrtle Beach November 14 & 15. As well as any tourney going on this weekend. Sooooooo tell Susy she can't go , or do I sit in the bleachers or I GOT IT BECOME A FEMALE IMPERSONATOR for a couple of weekends. Better start watching Rupaul

I guess you will have to sit on the side lines for those tournaments.

    dead period

The dead period was put into play to signify the start of a new year. ALL Coaches that are not in season are DEAD during the month of August. This was put into place initially to keep High School Head and Assistant Coaches that were coaching AAU basketball from being able to keep athletes away from Football and Volleyball. Simply put, if a kid was a *whatever* first athlete, they can now move on to their second or third sport without the fear of penalty or letting the person who is going to coach them down. September 1 signifies when preseason workouts can begin. Most softball teams participate in fall leagues. Head and assistant coaches as well as volunteer coaches are not allowed to coach these teams. Usually a parent or a travel ball coach coaches that team. I usually attend a game and sometimes 2 to take a few notes but it is best to stay away from that as well. You are not allowed to hold skilled workouts with more than 8 players. When I open the field and 8 players show up you are covered, as soon as the 9th player shows up I grab the keys to the mower or a rake and I start working on the field. You can lift in larger groups and run in larger groups, but when the balls come out and the bats start swinging, you gotta follow the rules.

This is really unfair to girls who don't play fall or winter sports.

    Why not spring sports practice?

I think we will need a Code of Silence!

no problem, i disagree with a lot of these rules. but my point is that if a girl feels that its important for her to play hs ball, and the coach knows this, its just best to rely on the other coaches and sit this one out (why punish one or two girls when you can just be a bystander?).. I've always felt the rule was unfair to softball/baseball due to the seasonal playing time.

its correct, the rule was instituted to limit the pressure from sports not in season at a time of tryouts for other sports. damn i hope that makes sense.

as far as a "code of silence"?????? that will never happen, i guarantee it.

this particular dead period coincides with football/volleyball tryouts.

again, if you want to correct the unfairness of this rule, you need to flood nchsaa with emails and start a campaign against it or exceptions to the rule for softball/baseball.

This rule also applies to any HS coach Varsity or JV and paid or not. And if I am not mistaken it would apply if a girl attends your HS even if not on the team, I know that rising freshmen fall under that dead period as I had that situation two years ago with a girl I coached from 8 years old and was told by NCHSAA that the dead period in AUG. applied to her.

    the forbidden zone...
Does that mean that my DD's HS coach could kind of hang around the bleachers (cough) dugout, and kind of say things like, "why is your elbow flying out of the slot on your swing?...", or "did you see the ball at contact on the last at bat..."? Sit in the bleachers, sit in a chair next to the dugout, talk all you want, but you can not offically coach. Any rule against a HS coach saying hello to a player, or asking them how they are doing during a TB game during a dead period?

I've been told by Que Tucker in the past that as long as you are not on the field, you can do what you want, including talking to your players. however, she did stipulate that calling pitches from the stands was a no no. i have witnessed a situation where the head coach was sitting next to his dugout telling his wife to tell the other coach what pitches to call????? thats like skirting the rules, but no one seemed to mind. we all think its a stupid rule anyway....like any dead period, you just have to be on the other side of the fence....

Why cant HS coaches simply give it a rest and let the girls play with other teams or do other activities. This is why the rule is there also, to reduce the pressure from coaches on players who might also have other things going on and might feel that their playing time during regular HS season would be in jeopardy if they dont participate with the HS coach year round.... this thread indicates to me that the rule is a good one. Every rule gets pushed to the limit.
