I forgot to add something to the first post... before the coin flip each team picks one person from their teams. One play goes to second the other stands at home... its a foot race to see who runs two bags the fastest. This is the craziest thing I have ever heard of... I think tie games are fine in pool play however, it bracket play there must be a winner but why do this crazy stuff and take away from the game we all love so much. Let them play ITB till the end... at least it lets the two teams decide the winner of the game as a team and by playing the game they work so hard for. Picking 3 players to hit the ball between the lines or a player to run bases to decide a game is CRAZY!!! THIS IS A TEAM SPORT!

Maybe they didn't know the rules for "Rock Paper Scissors". Honestly, it sounds like a rec league picnic tournament. I would skip that tournament next time.

Hey Dawgswoodrowpal, trust me on this one, when it comes to games ending in a tie or not completed in 7 inings due to time constraints........as right as you are in your opinion, (I agree with time considerations to appease the college coaches time schedule) you will never, wait let me speak up so you can hear me, YOU WILL NEVER, convince softballphreak to change his opinion on this subject!
Phreak is one of a kind. He's taught bookoos of kids hitting and does so free of charge. He's OK with excepting changes in the game be it pitching distances or bat composition, etc. I've known this man for 10 years and he has always bantered for playing EVERY game 7 innings or more and determine the winner on the field.

 now my head hurts, again. lol

Not quite accurate. I wouldn't care if the games were 5 innings; 4 innings, even. But it needs to be played until there is a winner. If necessary a tie could be broken by number of runners left on base, for example. Ever how it's done, but it needs to have something to do with competition. Not a coin toss or rock paper scissors.

Tie games, drop dead games, players not being allowed to finish their bat, etc., all tend to dilute the sport. At the rate it's going I wouldn't be all that surprised if one day they draw team names to see who is seeded where.

Some concessions are necessary; I understand that. But softball is becoming so commercialized that some players must be feeling like a product instead of an athlete.

The Cardinals Firecracker was a showcase that had the feel of a real tournament a few weeks ago. I have a feeling that drop dead time limits will not be there next year. I also hope they will consider some quick method of breaking a tie if a game ends in that condition. Suggestions of how to do that are requested in a separate thread.

Also, the lessons that are at no charge are only for players that play for teams that I may have some connection to. That's to prevent a conflict of interest. Such as "how come I'm not starting? What did I pay you for?"

Maybe we can use my tie-breaker.

2 innings of ITB then the 2 head coaches get in the pitchers circle with batting helmets on. The first one out of the circle loses.

Oh yeh, I forgot to mention that the girls and disgruntled parents from each team are also chucking softballs at the coaches while this is going on.

I think a good tiebreaker would be.... if the game is tied after 7 innings then the pitch and catcher must switch positions and first team to score wins... Sudden Death baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with phreak on this one. Play to there is a winner. No special tie breaking rules. Play the game as it was intended to be played.
