Just a few observations after making the trip to Taylorsville...

First, I thought all six teams were fairly equal to each other. In other words there was no single team playing that were heads and shoulders above the rest. I do think Alexander Central has the tools to give Hibriten a run in the new Northwestern 3A/4A. Foard looked decent...I think you may have a tight clustering of teams in the conf. among those like Foard, Watauga, South Caldwell and St. Stephens.

Reality has set in that East Burke is definitely a 2A program. They got a few spots on the field that looked okay but it ain't like it was in the 4A days, that's for sure. I think they're good enough to finish ahead of Draughn, West Caldwell, South Iredell and Bunker Hill. Bandys, N-C, Maiden will make the new CVAC a stout 2A conference.

Statesville had my head shaking all night long...the largest and most athletic squad out there getting beat around by smaller and less athletic teams who just wanted it more.

Burns is in a re-building mode. They won only 1 game last year. Being in the new SMAC 2A-3A, there may be opportunity for more than one win for the Bulldogs this season.

I was pleased with some things that I saw tonight from the McDowell Titans. We're still a very young squad. With the increased numbers it will provide the coaching staff with options which is always good. There could be as many a 3 backs carrying the ball this year, each guy brings his own style. We got one back with a little speed. We another back that could be a factor in the second half between the tackles. And we got a third option who also plays linebacker that is straight out smash-mouth style. It's a lot different than McDowell teams of the recent past, no stud back to ride 30 times a game...just a group of guys who will contribute in some fashion.

All teams were pretty physical. Alexanders Defense kills them. they looked sharp offensively, coach harper has them playing smash mouth football. Mcdowell doesn't have alot but the kids they do have play extremely hard. They also have a decent running game. I don't think i need to say anything about statesville, bigdan prety much covers that one. Burns will definitely win more than one game this year. I thought burns was the best team there.

The bolded part; that sounds familiar. Decent running game, kids play hard. Glad to hear that. I had much rather hear that than kids don't play hard. This team will get better as the season goes on.

I wouldn't judge too much about each team on their performance during scrimmages. I know EB for a fact rarely had all of their starters on the field at one time, especially on defense. They were also without DT/FB Tyler Blackwood who definitely makes a difference (please note #91). This most likely was the case for most of the teams at the scrimmage so I don't usually develop too much of an opinion until the Friday Night Lights come on. EB's numbers are definitely smaller than what they were in years past but it is still the same kids who won the NW4A JV title two years ago. Both lines definitely have some blocking issues but for the past two scrimmages they have improved as the games have went on.

    HEY APP....

Come on.. I know you didn't just say that scrimmages dont mean anything and that you don't take anything away from them and then your going to take a swipe at something someone said and brag that EB beat Burns 3-1? If your going to say scrimmages dont mean anything then cool stick by that. I agree. Coaches don't gameplan or anything like that. Just don't turn around in your next post and make crack on sum1 that said Burns looked to be the best team there by saying EB beat them 3-1. If your going to take a swipe at someone, make sure you get the scoring right. Touchdowns are 6 points.. not 1... so East Burke would have beaten them 18-6 due to no EP.

Actually since it is not a real game, usually the score is kept by the number of touchdowns scored, especially since there are no extra points. Atleast, most all newspaper write ups are scored that way. I was simply pointing out that if someone was going to say that Burns was the "best" team there, what was their reasoning since EB outscored them 3-1. Do you happen to be an Alexander Central fan? If so, I can see why you are being so defensive.

Hmm well most teams don't even play their first teamers the whole time. Alexander Centrals two primary backs didn't play against east burke the whole time. So i think you're comparing apples to oranges. Not to take anything away from east burke i'm sure they're a solid football team however the point of a scrimmage is to EVALUATE talent not put your best players out there to get hurt. and yes i am an alexander central fan too.

Please see post #14, I already said that. I was simply asking for justification of burns being the best team there.

    Not just a fan..

Well I'm not just a fan but a former player. Graduated few years ago. I was part of the AC team few yrs back that won AC's first ever home 4A playoff game.. Matter of fact that was AC's 1st ever Home 4A game to begin with and we won. Did you go to East Burke or where are you from App. I'm not being rude or sarcastic but really jw. I know where most of the people around this board are from and what school they support but I don't know of your allegiance. Thanks for the post and conversing back and forth. Things get kicked off tomorrow night.... Whats the weather situations?! It doesn't look good from what I've seen.
