    Bad Umpires???

    Don't tell me we have bad umpires in this area, REALLY? NO!!! lol. This is not just related to AAU; these officials work many different associations. The problem is in the lack of actual training that occurs. I've been on this issue for years and offered our services to try and improve the quality. But as I say in my camps, "An umpire receives games for one of three reasons:
    (1) The umpire is friends with the assignor;
    (2) There is such a need for umpires that they have to use anyone breathing;
    or in a perfect world,
    (3) The umpire is qualified and dedicated to performing his/her duties on every pitch of every game.

    Unfortunately, items 1 and 2 are more of the norm than the exception. The only way to change this is for everyone involved to demand a certain level of professionalism. Remember, even though we as parents and on-lookers get really upset and find it deplorable that this is happening, the bottm line is, the only ones who are really getting the shaft here, are our daughters. Instead of just making random comments, please contact the people that run the show, and work toward a solution. Remember, to these people, this is a business where they make a pretty good imcome from and with that, their employees should be held accountable.

    I agree ump! I've known Robin Phillips for many years, and I can say that she has never failed in correcting a problem that involved one of our teams. I am sure she will handle this problem accordingly.

    I was at that game and where the ump was wrong was not to throw you out of that game immediately. Any coach that yells across the field to a 10U player standing on second to “run her over next time” should not be allowed on the field.

    Thank you mister umpire.

    That's not at all what was said pal. I said to my player next time they stand on the bag, "knock them out of the way." Big difference. And my name is Tim Collie. I don't do the internet anonymity thing. Feel free to msg me here or email me [email protected] to discuss "survivorball." I don't know of any decent coach that teaches players to stop and run "around" a defender standing on a base when the ball is hit to the fence. The umps and you were wrong and the real problem was the umps unwillingness to talk after the game like a calm adult.

    This thread ought to get locked before it goes downhill

    Robin I think you are doing a great job with all the responsibility that you have on you keeping this program going. Robin Phillips is one of the nicest directors I know, give her a break...:toetap05:

    Agree. Robin is very good at what she does. This was another fella running it. As stated above the Concord tournys are the best.

    There needs to be some other resolution than teaching a 10U player to "knock them out of the way". Officials are there to call obstruction if necessary. Sportsmanship is the greater virtue.

    "knocking" someone out of the way running the bases is not unsportsmanlike- especially in travel ball. Maybe a better word exists, I don't know what it is. My kid catches, and if she gets "knocked out of the way" because she is 4 ft up the third base line, I have no issue, and she might remember next time to be in the right spot (unless its a blatant shove to the face etc)

    Either way, the ump handled it wrong. After a game you need to be able to explain yourself calm and manlike, and not run away upstairs refusing to talk. The teams pay his fee. And the director of the tourny botched it too backing his buddy ump instead. (not Robin)
