I understand what you're saying about the base. But you can understand what the 10U player standing in the wrong place feels when she hears an adult tell another player to "knock her out of the way." I tell our players when when another player is obstructing (usually at 1st) that the bag belongs to them--they should not let the other player take it from them. And since they are the ones in motion they usually achieve the same results you wanted.

A parent was hollering to her child to run over a 10 year old ? I hope not that sounds kind of harsh, but now if the defensive player was in the way and there was contact accidently then it's part of the game, but if the offensive player was trying to hurt the defensive player that calls for ejection, end of story...:corn:

No that's not what was said. Not close

you MUST teach runners to draw contact if the baseline is totally blocked by a player standing on a bag so you GET THE CALL. If the runner averts contact it slows you down considerably and the umps miss it- which is what happened in this case. I think there are coaches teaching girls to stand on first on purpose because it happens so much.

I wasn't at this game so this is just my opinion. The solution would have been for an official to warn the benches for the threat of "knocking the player out of the way." At the same time there could have been a reminder on what obstruction is.

Inadvertent contact is part of the game. Intentionally hurting or trying to hurt a player calls for ejection. Not saying that's what happened here.

Commonsense (which isn't always present in the heat of competition) says you would never intentionally hurt another player. This is a sport--not a war. The girls playing against each other today may very well be playing on the same team in the future.

Most coaches have probably come to know and care about players on opposing teams. There is no way you would want to see them hurt any more than you would your own kids.

You can play hard and still play clean! Playing clean doesn't mean you won't get dirty--and sometimes you'll get hurt. Getting hurt isn't fun but you might get hurt having fun.

    running over player

Running over a player on purpose should not be tolerated on any level. I AM an umpire and if I see a player intentionally run into a player I will immediately eject that player. But contact does happen. One way to help with this would be to have the double first base on all fields. I was not at the tourney in Locust and did not see the incident. If I had been the ump and saw the accidental contact I would have had a quiet moment with both head coaches to remind them about what the consequences of intentional contact were. In the case of the coach yelling anything about "running into" the player the next time, a quick warning to him/her that if one of his/her players intentionally run into someone now that I would eject that player AND HIM/HER. I have done it before. As to Robin P., grow a pair, talk with site director first. If not happy then call Robin later after you calm down. She is a very sweet and professional person. She would have talked to you and she WILL address problem at the Locust complex.

This is my first post on here so I don't want to make anyone angry to start with but I have noticed a problem with the way kids are taught to play first base. Actually I think it is what is not being taught. I am not exactly referrencing the above occurance but what I have witnessed in my area. I was taught when I played first that once the ball was through the infield to take about 2 or 3 steps towards the mound. This accomplishes two things. One the player is not in the runners way and 2 it moves you into a better position to back up a throw or to become the cutoff if the play dictates it. It may be coaches teaching "tricks" but I really feel it is more a result of what is not being taught.
