Now that MS ball has been going on for a few weeks just wanted to see how many schools have coaches that know the game or are they just out there to fell a spot. Most of the schools in our area have coaches that really don't have a clue and they are feeding our area HS. If it where not for TB we would be in trouble.

Being a middle school coach and teacher I can say it is hard to find a teacher at each school that is dedicated to any single sport. Most end up coaching just to give the kids a chance to play. Most people that really want to coach a sport and really excell at it will move to the high school level. We only have 12 teachers in our school. Most coaches coach several sports. I am lucky in that I will only be coaching softball. It is giving me a lot of time to prepare. Already working with a few ladies for the spring of 2011 (6th graders). Most of our other players are either playing soccer, soon to switch to volleyball or cheering. With only 180 7th and 8th grade students they end up spread pretty thin.

    Thanks to all the volunteers!

It's hard to find middle school coaches. At our middle school, usually it's a Dad that volunteers. Thanks to all the teachers and parents who volunteer so that these girls can start playing for their school and not have to wait til high school.

...nice tongue in cheek slant on where it all starts for kids. And you are SO right!
When I, or Wndmllr, or Cheeze, Braves, Blues, CardC2, ....and especially Comet, (wow!, he's the best!), and all of the rest of us old timers left unnamed for no reason, but will agree, when we came along, there was no soccer. We had wooden bats that would break if you hit the ball on the trademark. That same bat would buzz your hands so bad when you hit one off the handle or God forbid off the end of the bat. We had wool uniforms and baseballs that when torn a little, all the younger kids, brothers and sisters, would get to pull apart. Yep, they would unwind that sucker, all that string and get to the rubber core.
We had mommas watching the games hollering "keep your cooooool",.
Win or lose, we left the field, on the way to the burger joint for root beer, fries and a big barney, (1000 island dressing)
We all wanted to get to ride in the van so that we could sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall.
When we got home and snug in the bed, we'd sneak a transistor radio under the pillow and listen to the A.M. broadcast of the Cleveland Indians.
We'd moan back and forth of how tired we were, and scream when the "strawberry" that we proudly got sliding into a base got stuck to the sheet....I know ya'll remember that gig!

Playing anything is playing for fun.

I remember season after season trying on my brothers Rawlings baseball glove waiting for the day it would fit my hand so I could use it. Came across that glove the other day, couldn't believe how small it was. Bet my Dad didn't pay $15.00 for it. I remember every big catch that glove made.

    Good Times...

    I wasn't trying to be tongue-in-cheek. I was serious.

The reason I asked is because I have read in other threads where the rec programs and TB and school ball worked together and that area had strong HS teams.

TB teams are usually looking for players with the most skill they can get. I was wondering if those players were getting that skill and MS not getting that skill.

Also, are the MS coaches being offered any help learning to coach by either TB or HS coaches?

.....and the reason I said tongue in cheek is because I know how passionate you are about the value of recball. I agree with you brother.

Just wondering about the parent coaching situation. Most systems down here are getting real funny about letting anyone that is not an employee of the school system coach. Liability issues I think. And the fact that if the coach is not an employee of the system they are really limited in their "authority" if the coach acts inappropriatly. Just wondering if this policy is being stressed anywhere else.

    Helping coach

In our area we have several people how have coached TB and offer to help but where told no. We can not even set in on practice we have to watch from our cars. Several guys have offered to help even we getting a back ground check done and still told no. MS ball is just for fun but you can really tell a difference between girls who play TB and the ones that don't.
