What Makes A Great Coach ??

Ie...One that is knowledgeable , and sturn and short tempered with the kids or one that is a student of the game always willing to listen to his or her kids, and basically teach them to be players and good citizens, and be leaders ?? Give your opinion...

Number one is paitience for sure.

I would rather have a student of the game. I believe that coaches, like players, never quit learning. There is always something to add, new drills, techniques and the like.

In any sport. Players are individuals, they may play as a team, but what makes them unique and special, is there personalities and different skill levels.
I have had great chats with some great athletes, who have gone through diversity to get where they are going, and in every case, the player would say stuff like, but my coach worked with me while this healed, or we figured t his out. And when you watch lets say the NCAA WS, there are more stories about players triumphing over hardships than you can shake a stick at. I will bet, that not one of those players said, "good thing my coach ran me till I passed out even though I have Asthma". To me, the best coach can take the best of what they have, and work with individuals, as well as a team and mold them together.

Knowledge is great, using it inproperly is not.

I think a great coach is adaptable. No one method fits all situations. There is a time to be stern and hard just as there are times to be understanding and patient. A great coach can not only do both but knows when each tactic is needed to help the individual reach their true potential. We had a kid miss a game one July 4th weekend. Next day he was ready to play. We explained that we understood his mom refused to bring him to the game because of a family cookout, but rules are rules. He was not allowed to play in the field but had to hit as it was an organizational rule everyone hit. We told him he could sit in the corner and pout OR step up and show his team mates that he was truly sorry he could not be there the day before. He went 3 for 4 and had several RBI's hitting in the bottom slot of the line up. In the championship game 2 days later he came in the last 2 innings, of a 100 degree day, behind the plate and really helped us stop the other team from running all over the place. Those are the moments you remember. In this case I felt we were stern yet fair. I also believe we helped the player learn a little something.

Excellent Communicator. The kids need to know what expectations are and what is expected. Congratulate success and work on shortfalls.

 

I think a great coach encompasses a wide variety of characteristics. Patience, sterness, self control, intelligence, decipline. But above all, they have to love coaching and the game that they're coaching. If one doesn't love what they're doing, how can you expect them to do it well? I've had many coaches at the lower level of playing softball that loved their children who played but didn't love the game. Therefore, they were not the best coaches. Once you get to a higher level of play, the coaches genuinely love to coach and love to make their players better. This, in my opinion, makes for the best coach possible.

 

What makes a great coach?

Great players! If you're talking about coaching in college recruiting is at least 50% of the formula. Player development at the college level is way over rated. If a coach can identify and recruit the right players he/she is half way there. The next 25% is effective communication. Motivating these great players and keeping them all headed in the same direction. Player development, game strategy and the rest is the other 25% . . . far less important than most people think.

 

Oh No.....

I have no public opinion on this topic however, our FEARLESS LEADER is a good example - there is no perfect coach. And ALL volunteer coaches should be commended simply for what they have to put up with OFF the field on a daily basis....
