How do you rate the coaches in N.C. of any level ?? Ie..knowledge,patience,teacher of mechanics, love of the game, in it for the girls ......etc... Score 1-10...where 10 is the highest level..

First of all you have to have a love for the game to be a coach with alot of patience.

With any sport there are absolutes. Teaching proper mechanics and knowledge of the game I think would be key. At the HS level you have to be invloved at the feeder Rec and middle school level where development really starts, because that is where the bulk if not all your players are going to come from. You do by promoting the sport through camps, clinics, and other programs both within and outside your program, including lessons and travel ball.

Same can be said for some TB programs, but with travel ball you can play year round. But the biggest problem I see with TB is many coaches are not developing. They take the best players they can find as oppossed to a HS coach who is at the mercy of what walks through the door, go and play, and tells you your kid has to go somewhere else to "get it". There is no real insentive to develop, unless of course you play Daddy Ball. Not true with with all TB teams. There are those dedicated to getting girls to the next level and want to be extremely competitive. I know because I've seen how many teams conduct business. You can tell a big difference between the ones who work and the ones who don't. You get out of it what you put into it.

The absolutes. Mechanincs and knowledge, but it's not what you say it's what you do with them that defines coach, player, and team.

To be honest I am dissappointed in the rec ball scene. I would say a 3 at best. I appreciate the time the put in but if you are going to coach a sport study up and learn. Watching better teams and talk to their coach's. Too many excuses like "they have so many kids to choose from". Suck it up and get to work. If your kids are not the best they can be then you are not doing your job. Worry more about your own team and less about others (sorry about the rant).

High school softball around here seems to be a "throw away sport". Whoever is willing to coach, well they get the job. The western part of the state won all 4 championships last year. I live in the east. Enough said. Grade of 4.

Just getting into the TB scene so I am not qualified to make an educated response.

Now these grades are very much regionally biased so I hope I have not made anyone mad. But you can believe I will be traveling this spring to check some of you guys to see how it should be done. To be the best you need to watch and learn from the best.

    i agree

You have not made me mad at all. You just answered what I have been knowing all along. Keep pushing the MS and HS ball. Put together that TB team bring them on up this way, if there is nothing around your location. Good or bad and in-between we have all kinds here too. Take a lick-en now, do some kick-en later. Just stay with it and take those throw aways keep them focused and you will be surprised.....

REC Ball - "haven't seen any"
    High School - 9
    Travel Ball - 9
Watching those kids give their all, and those coaches stay after practice to help them... - Priceless!

    bad

The bad thing is rec ball and high school has become one in the same in a lot of places. Coaches don't know or don't care about the team. I am not saying everywhere because there are some great high school coaches and they do a great job. There is no rec ball to speak of because that might require some parents to do something besides drop their kid off and then complain about the coach all season.

I would have to give Rec. coaches A 7.-because alot of players find the love of the game through the rec programs, and have alot less budget than Tb,orHS Ball.I say this not that the rec coaches are the most knowledgable,or know proper mechanics. But that they have the patience, the love of the game, and in it for the girls

TB-is A new world I have just entered, but have seen how alot of Teams operate.Cut-throat deal. But you have ability to choose players from the best talent pools, and any district. So the travelball gets A 9 because they have to take these talents and play A 1/2 season in A weekend. And broaden the girls talents against the best in the state.

HS will get A 5.Reasons being they have to volunteer as A teacher, etc. Not to say they don't have the love of the game, but have seen players skills spiral downwards becuse of not being able to use the technics used at the traveball level, and also has an effect at the middle school level as well.

hate to say it my friend, but i think i disagree with you on this. rec ball is deplorable in gaston county, middle school is barely average and i'm basing this on what level of talent the girls have when they finally get to hs. do you realize that we still have to teach freshmen how to run bases and in most cases, where to throw the ball when they catch it, heck, most dont know what a force out is....

as far as hs, ashbrook, forestview, hunter huss, east gaston and kings mtn all have travel ball coaches or former travel ball coaches on their staff, if not the head coach, so hs ball in gaston county has improved dramatically over the last six or seven years.

but in most cases, hs ball cant compare with tb based, in my opinion, on the fact that you can have the best 12-14 girls on your team from 12-14 different hs's. hs ya can recruit (or at least you're not supposed to be able too)

so if i had to rate coaches in this area:

    rec 1
    middle school 3
hs school 7 (up from 5 a couple of years ago)

tb in gaston county (8 -but going to get better i believe)

i can't believe you gave rec coaches a 1.most of them have 3 out of the five qualities in question.really shouldn't put middle and high school together.I have heard of alot of girls in this area skip middle schoolball just to strengthen their skills at the TB level, and then play HS Ball.TB coaches on the highschool team is A plus for this area.I agree this is why our area has improved in HS level.
