DEBUT: First College game for Former Freedom standout ALI FORD:

BY: Josh Jones / Times-News correspondent

ELON — It was the freshmen who provided the offensive spark needed to secure a season-opening victory for Elon University’s women’s basketball team Friday night at Alumni Gym.
Freshman sharp-shooter Ali Ford wreaked havoc from the perimeter, while fellow underclassman Kelsey Evans owned the lane as Elon cruised past visiting Youngstown State 86-66 in the Phoenix Classic.
Elon takes on Navy tonight in the nightcap of the tournament, while the Penguins and High Point clash in the opener.
Ford supplied a game-high 23 points, draining four 3-pointers and dishing out eight assists. There were a couple of times in transition, when Ford darted down the court with the ball and went behind-the-back — pulling up at the top of the key nailing the jump shot.

Ali had team high 12pts but all in first 12 min of game with Elon up 31-9...Navy called timeout and then collasped on her the rest of the game (no more open looks)- Elon dropped that game in last minute--Elon's top 3 scorers are freshmen-so maybe a "good loss" if it helps them focus on finishing people off. big game with Virginia Tech on Nov 28th 1pm.

Updated: I know its only a week into the season (3games)but the SoCon website stats lists Ford as #1 scorer in conference at 19.3ppg--also #1 in steals and 3pointers made. Also #1 in assists @ 4.7--(made 7 x 3's last game) As of 11-22-09

"FORD shoots to Top of SoCon"
    From Staff reports:
Former Freedom High basketball standout and the reigning NC female athlete of the year, Ali Ford, is having a stellar season for the Elon Phoenix of the Southern Conference. With 1 game remaining, Ford finds herself at the top of the conference in SoCon scoring at 17.2 ppg & 445 total points. Last years Player of the year Shanara Hollinquest ranks second at 15 ppg. Ford also ranks first in made three-pointers with 77, 7th in assists, 6th in steals, and 4th in Free throw percentage at 82.5. She has started every game and has helped the Phoenix post wins over teams that have been in the top 3 in the conference most of the season. The win at UT Chattanooga on Dec 17th was Elon’s first ever win over the perennial girls power. Ford’s career high sits at 27pts tallied vs Davidson on January 4th . Coach Karen Barefooot comments; “Ali Ford’s numbers speak for themselves, as one of the top 10 freshmen in the country. She has already helped triple our SoCon wins from last season!
Ford also leads the league in number of games over 20 pts with ten. During Elon’s 28 games this season she has posted 24 games in double figures, while she’s listed as the statistical leader in 12 categories on Elon’s website. Barefoot adds ; “Ali continues to lead our team and dominate in our conference at the guard position, she’s so competitive and I love coaching her because she is a winner!” Ford commented; “Elon and Coach Barefoot have given me a great opportunity and I wanted to make the most of it right away.” The Burke county native is also ranked nationally is several categories, one being the #2 freshman three point shooter and ranked in the top 10 as a freshman scorer. The post season accolades are sure to follow but she has shown she can take her 5’4” frame, into the college arena and compete with the best the women’s game has to offer. The Phoenix will take part in the SoCon Tourney in Charlotte next week, March 4-8. Soconsports.com has bracketing and seasonal stats updated daily.
