9. SW4A teams made seven finals appearances in the 70’s. How many titles did they win? 1 – Myers Park 1970.

10. SW4A teams made two finals appearances in the 80’s. How many titles did they win? 2 – Independence 1984, South Meck 1989

11. What school has won or shared the most league titles? Providence won its 9th in 2009 – South Meck and Independence are second with 8.

12. Only one non-Mecklenburg team won a SW4A title. Who? Ashbrook 1993.

13. Four SW4A teams did not win the league or tournament title, yet made it to the state championship series. Who are they? West Meck 1971, Harding 1975, South Meck 2005, Ardrey Kell 2009

20. This year’s realignment has seven schools in the SW4A. What has been the maximum number of schools in the league? 14 - From 1970-77 the NCHSAA had two division of seven teams each that play in the SW4A. Each division winner would then play for the league title.

Bonus: In 1977 Garinger finished the season at 17-1, yet did not win the league. What happened? Just before the playoffs were to start it was found that Garinger had used an ineligible player. He had moved from Michigan and enrolled at Garinger and ended up taking over at first base. In the final regular season game he was hurt and went for medical treatment. Needing parental authorization, it was discovered that his parents still lived in Michigan. School officials were suprised because the parents had attended several Garinger games during the season. The NCHSAA ruled that Garinger would forfeit the 11 games that the player had appeared. The Wildcats appealed the decision, but the appeal was denied. The day following the appeal denial, Garinger was to play in the SW4A championship game, but the players were unsure if they wanted to participate. The following morning they (the players) voted to play the game which they won 11-0 over Independence. Ironically Harding and South Meck also had to forfeit games that same season, both for using players that also played in a semi pro league, giving Independence and Myers Park, both 11-7 after forfeits, the Division 9 and 10 SW4A playoffs slots.

Bonus #2: Why were there multiple winners in the SW4A in 1974 & 75? With the SW4A having two division from 1970-77 the league would play a championship game between each division winner. In 74 & 75 there was no title game. East Meck won the Division 9 title in both 74 and 75. West Meck shared the Division 10 title with Myers Park in 1974 and won it outright in 75.

My brother played on the '75 team with Noles. I played on the '88 team, but (as was pointed out above) we were a part of the Tri-County 4A then.

 

The NCHSAA has the realignments excluding the 1985-86 realignment on their website. The state championship games are also there. I found the ‘85 realignment in the Feb 9th, 1985 addition of the Fayetteville News.

For the SW4A info, I went to the main library where all past additions of the Charlotte Observer are on microfiche and researched the league championships and tournament championship games.

Which South Meck player and his dad still claim to have caught the biggest fish ever in NC?

haha nice braves.... it would be nice if mincmi spent half as much time on his fishing report as he does on his quiz's and previews... I've got some pictures of his in state fishing... but it's probably for my own good that I keep those under wraps.... He claims I get to all the good spots first.... but I'm sure thats what tj does too.
