There is a reason that one of the very first questions from a college coach is about grades. Because very few athletic scholarships are a "full ride", most schools now put together a package- athletic and scholastic money. Unless your DD is a superstar pitcher, the offer is skewed towards the academic side. There are many talented players that are on no athletic scholarships simply because their academic grants pays for their full tuition. Some of the athletes did not do as well academically, so the schools tries to make an attractive offer weighed more heavily on athletic money.

When you receive an offer you may find it to be 25-75% of tuition, but is that state schools or private schools? Obviously, there is a large descrepancy between both.

Although tuition at any school has gone through the roof, don't be scared of the private school tuition vs the public schools. Private schools have many more options for grants than public schools. Many times their packages are much more attractive in the total dollars they are offering.

But I can say this confidently, the DD that is the best talented athlete (particularly pitchers) and shows equal talent in the classroom will always get the best offers.

If someone tells you they received a full ride, in most cases they are saying it was a combination of athletic and academic scholarships.

Personally, I don't care how they arrive at the final number, my concern is what's left.

    Lots to consider

There are many factors that must be considered and your figures on number of scholarships is NCAA and not the various conferences or schools. In NC, I know of one D-11 school that has 3.5 scholarships, another 2.5, and still a third offering 1.5 for softball. Are the schools fully funded? How many do they have for a given year? Did a kid lose her scholarship or leave school? What positions do they need and how badly? How to they split up each full scholarship? Pitchers are the most likely to get full rides, catchers, SS, and power hitters or "difference makers" come next in order but there are more partial scholarship players than full rides.
Look if DD is playing softball simply to get money for college and does not love to play, enjoy her team mates, have fun traveling and seeing new places and meeting new people, then you should not spend the money. That said, there is lots of money for the players that have talent, work hard, have a desire to play at next level, have quality classroom skills, and work hard at e-mailing coaches, letting them know where and when they are playing, and becoming a person to the coaches and not just another number is key. There are many walk-on's in this state but those may have been provided hidden or not well known academic money because they play a sport. Also the players that get some softball money and then academic money may also benefit from these types of assistance. My daughter was one of these kids!
    To each his own.

whats left.... show me the $$$$

Thank you..... This is the bottom line. I just received my DD bill for UNCG for spring 2010. OUCH!!! She is not playing SB. Of this yrs incoming college FR class. How many got a FULL ride? That's what this thread started out about. IF there are about 30 girls from NC playing SB D1 in-state or out of state. Would 10% be a safe # to say that are getting a full ride? That would be about 3 girls. My guess is those are pitchers and maybe catchers. The rest are part pay or full pay to play.... If my 11 yr old can get full ride GREAT:clap: we will take it and better yet we will take what ever we can get. My best bet is hope for the 4.0 gpa.

Amen brother. Speaking in terms of baseball only--despite rumors to the contrary, full rides athletically don't happen. It wouldn't make sense considering the automatic grants NC kids get to go to school in state. A full ride package is very rare, too. It happens, but you better be smart like GMan's kid. He probably gets paid to attend college

Could the reason be that Coastal Carolina isn't a NC school?

Exactly....how much is left? My Senior year at college was funded by grants based on needs and grades. I never played sports in college. The money is out there whether a kid plays ball or not, and sometimes what you'd get at a private school might be less than what you'd get to go to a state school and not play. Lots a variables. Guess you find out for sure once you get there, and is it worth the trade off. Always a place to play.

    Fini people

Then there are the financial aid people you talk to at the schools. They can not stand the word NEGOTIATE but they will do it. What will it take to get your DD in our school. Coaches talking to their AD. Parent talking to the FINI people. Coming up with a package that ALL are happy with and what parents can afford to pay. Buy our car sales pitch. If the FULL RIDE is not there.

This is right on, at least it was for us. Agree that private schools have a greater variety of grants available to offset the higher tuition cost.

    ...None

Pick apart the cost of going to school all you want. Athletic money, academic money in D1, which is dipersed without ANY regard of a kid playing ball, Pell grants that 99% of TB folks won't qualify for, Stafford loans, lalalala, and so on and so on.

Its nobodies business what your kid gets in aid. As for whats left over for Pops to pay, don't forget the cotten picken $6 a day to park on campus!
