    IT was Coach (Spud) Jones (RIP)

    some of the best players in east charlotte chose not to play for him.

    *

    For many of us that played for him - he remains - one of the most influential men - we would ever have the good fortune to know.
    When i meet another EAGLE that played for him there is an instant kinship - We KNOW what the other guy endoured - in order to get on the field and play.

    He invented the "platoon - style practice" - we had 45 on the team - he had to.

    figure 8s on the hill by the football field - sprints - "magellons" - we easily ran more than the track team

    We also wore our SUNDAY BEST to school on gameday h or v.

    He kept a razor in his desk drawer - absolutely NO facial hair.

    He MADE us grow -up & think about the TEAM - not just ourselves.

    He was a great history teacher as well.

    I miss those coaches. It's what I grew up with.

    How good a coach he was - i really don't know.
    Sink was probably better.

    Back then just keeping us out of trouble
    got you half way to first place.

    We went to the playoffs twice.

    That is what made them so unique. mid- 1970's Long hair, wide lapels & bellbottoms. They were tough guys though! A lil intimidating
