Don't forget the O's. I think they siged 14 of their 18 2010 class, and Diamond Rats are not far behind.

As you can see there are only 26 competitive NC collegiate baseball programs. If you make the following assumptions you can see that the opportunities are not as readily available as one might think.
27 Scholarship Positions per school x 26 schools = (Max of) 702 scholarship opportunities
If you consider that there are 4 Classes of players (Sr, Jr. So. Fr), the 702 opportunities is really only 175 per year. 702 / 4 = 175 per year.
Don’t forget that roughly 1/4 of the players that are on NC rosters are currently from out of state. 175 per year x 75% (from NC) = 131 scholarships total per year.
The 4 “big teams” mentioned earlier each carry about 20 players and ALL of them sign with D1 and/or D2 programs. That’s 80 players which only leaves somewhere around 50 “In-State” D1 and D2 scholarships.
If you take the 15+ (other) teams that currently compete in showcases throughout NC and assume there are 15-20 players on each team that’s somewhere around 225-300 high school players going after those 50 scholarships. So it’s safe to assume that about 1 in 5 of these players will be offered a D1 or D2 (In-State) scholarship each year. If you are one of these teams and you have more than 3 or 4 scholarship offers each year you are ahead of the curve.
Summary:
Now all that’s based on the assumption that there are only 26 competitive teams in NC. You may think there are others?
It also assumes that scholarships are equally divided among the 4 classes (which may or may not be true for each institution).
Furthermore, it assumes that “Northern” players are actively seeking to play in NC and that as many as 1/4 of the rosters are filled with them. Players from FL are even showing up on NC rosters now!
The last assumption I made is the most obviously accurate. All you have to do is look at the “commits” that are coming from the Dirtbags, Canes, Panthers and Cubs and you can see that accurate. Almost none of those 80+/- players fail to get an offer.
So………..maybe there aren’t as many “opportunities” as we thought?

The flaw I made is that several of the 80 from the top 4 teams will go outside of NC to play. Maybe as many as 20? So instead of 50 NC Scholarships there may be as many as 70 or so?

Not to mention the outstanding scholarship opportunities at SC schools (and others).

Still and all these are far more difficult odds than people want to realize.

One O is going to NY to play. What a novel idea. Players there have less of a season and not near as many training facilities. A southern HS player may have a leg up there. Not the reason this player went, I'm sure he had NC/SC offers too. He is a very solid IF.
There are some very good D3 programs as well. You may not get a sport scholly there, ut they will find money elsewhere if they want you. Don't forget JUCO either. Many of those players are looking to finish at 4 year schools with scholarships also.

I forgot about the JUCO Transfers

I forgot about the JUCO transfers coming in to the D1 and D2 programs each year. Put that max back down to 50 Scholarships again. I'm sure there will be 20 or more JUCO guys entering those 26 schools in 2010.

I am SLIGHTLY offended - you left NCCU (North Carolina Central University in Durham) off of this list. We are also D1 in our 4th year of having baseball back at the University. We even have a trip to ECU in our future.....

Told you "they" wouldn't go for it. In denial? The scouts are not (often) at the HS, Legion or (certainly not) Babe Ruth games. They all follow the top showcase teams around and fight over those players. That's really what's going on.

Aren't you leaving out alot of collegiate baseball programs in the state?
Here's a list, and alot of baseball opportunities exist!

I've certainly seen college scouts at high school, and American Legion games. The numerous scouts in this state, representing the multitude of baseball programs are not all chasing the same players.
