    Grades - Agreed, But...

Grades should always come before softball and many other extra-curricular activities! However, to put the burden on a coach or travel team to instill this point in a young lady seems irrational. Many of the posts on this thread have discussed parents having higher standards than the schools - which is awesome!

As much as each coach and travel organization wants to have players that are talented both in the classroom and on the softball field, the push to get good grades really should come from home. If a coach has to kick a player off their team due to grades, I would ask why the parents hadn't already removed her.

There's no question that grades should always play an important role, but not all kids are as fortunate as most on here--where parents play an instrumental role in their life. I know many kids that come from a tough home life and sports are an avenue for them to have fun and smile for two hours before going home to an unfortunate situation. Some things we tend to take for granted, but having a quality home life is not a given.

All I'm saying is that not all kids will be going to college...and I don't want to exclude them from playing.

    Agree

Agree with your statement about family life issue but here is where we as coaches can do more than coach, we can help instill into that kid that working hard in school, getting good grades and actually learning and seeking knowledge can be a step toward not repeating what her parents dealt with for what ever reason. Team mates can assist as well and actually help with homework, texting or e-mailing each other when needed and parents of team mates can assist as well when travel occurs. You see extended family is what we are all about! Who knows, we maybe able to reach the parents or parent and help them see the importance of education.
Sure some of this maybe a "dream world" approach but we never know till we try.
One last point, as several post have stated, we all can not make A & B's but unless someone has a learning disability or other physical or mental disorder, they can make C's and are capable of success in life, don't sell them short by expecting less.
    Merry Christmas!:smilejap:

Unless she had a learning disability, then that is one issue, but if she was just lazy I would probably take away all her important things, such as her cell phone, car ( except to go to school ), and anything else that would make her uncomfortable in her everyday living. If her grades did not come up then I would probably put her out on her own...J/k....:FO3DRfall: GURU

    Take the car...

...and make her ride the yellow bus of shame while the rest of her friends roll up in their cars! Trust me, she will HATE that more than losing her phone (maybe)!!!
