Question? Whats going on in High School Basketball, why are the refs letting play get out of hand. The game we had tonight was a slug fest and then when one of our players ask a ref to watch a certain player he gave him a T.
Is the state tellling the refs to let them play or what? And if they are not going to enforce the paint they need to just take that rule out of the books, the coach we played against tonight is the smartest Ive seen, he has taught his kids to set up in the paint he knows they dont call 3 seconds any more. Just Wondering if anybody else noticed the same. Yes and by the way we lost but we do that alot, so not crying here just wondering.

I heard they were told to try to get fights started. The state really likes to deal with bench clearing brawls. I hope I get to see one on Friday night at the game i will be attending!:iagree:

    refs this year

I've actually noticed the opposite in NW3A/4A games and am predicting it will hurt those teams come tournament time. Refs have allowed almost NO contact underneath. We've had multiple games with 30-40 fouls calls, bigs on both teams in foul trouble before end of 1st quarter. Nothing like going to a basketball game and watching a free throw contest. The pattern has been call anything a foul in the 1st quarter, call most things in the 2nd quarter, keep your whistle in your pocket during the 3rd quarter, and in the 4th quarter call it reasonably balanced. Essentially school ball has become travel ball, no defensive positioning, or you get called for a foul.

Well I do a little bit of calling on the weekends. My question is the lane violation. Is it enforced of not, I dont see that called as much as it should. I agree with you it is a tough job, just wondering what the high school association is teaching about the lane. Trying to learn something here, thats all.

We try to do as much preventive officiating as possible with the being in the lane and contact that happens when players are posting up. We try to talk with the players and say" #42 get out of the lane" or " easy guys, keep those arms down" or something like that. if they dont listen to me, I put air in the whistle and get them.

As far as three seconds we were told this. If a player is in the lane posting up for 2 seconds and then receives the ball, if he turns and makes a direct attempt to go to the basket, we are not to call three seconds. Even if the player has been in the lane for 4-5 seconds. If the post up for a couple seconds then receive the ball and make no attempt to score, we were told to get them immediately.

If a player is standing at the high post with his heels in the lane and doesn't get the ball, I probably will not call anything even if he stands there for a long time.

    Hope this helps.

    Question for Mtnman

Appreciate the lane explanation. You clearly practice the trade, so here are two other questions. 1) Is there any guidance on who should call what areas of the floor? I'm at times surprised when a ref near midcourt calls a foul underneath when the ref on the baseline, closest to the play, doesn't call anything. I seldom see the reverse. 2) Is there any guidance on calling fouls differently under the basket and outside the 3-pt line? I watch guards riding the dribbler with their hands regularly, but again, similar play underneath seems to draw a whistle this year.

I'm willing to admit personal bias, but wondering if refs are directed in any particular ways on these issues. Thanks.

    rough play

You are seeing the same things we do in the Rocky River conference so it seems it is a directive from someone at the state level. It does suck when I see kids airborne driving to the basket and get contacted and redirected in the air and no call. They really need to protect a kid who has made a good move but then gets hammered by help defense. Worse yet I have a video showing a kid that got plastered from behind on a breakaway and ended up in the wall and the kid that did it got no where close to making a play on the ball. Yeah they called a 2 shot flagrant but he should have been thrown out. It was a dangerous play period and had no place. Bottom line, you get what you tolerate and they tolerate rough thuggish play. Then they act surprised when a fight breaks out.

    hey mtnman

hey mtnman.. Any stipulations on calling games? I'd be willing to do it. I've called every other sport some on weekends and stuff but never basketball.

Look on the NCHSAA site and get the booking agent for your area. It is under the officials section on the site. He will tell you everything you need to do. Everyone is always looking for officials.
