    another thing...

... when it comes to legion. Look at the post for the early registration for the legion team in Pineville. The directions on who is eligible, where they live, distance from this place or that, it all makes my head hurt!

I wish the folks down there all the best but I'm glad I don't have to worry with all that anymore!

    Amen to that!

Unless they've improved in the last 5 years, Charlotte's geographic dividing lines for legion baseball are ridiculous. Forget the obvious attraction of showcase for a moment. Lines in populated areas that are drawn by local organizers to pack a particular post rather than promoting high school relationships are enough to make the sensible player look elsewhere.

Screwy dividing lines in metro areas, outdated participation rules, inclusion of college players...from a 3rd party's perspective, legion ball is pretty capable of being its own worst enemy.

Now throw in the compelling economics of showcase ball from a scouting and recruiting perspective, and it becomes easy to see why legion ball's become increasingly anachronistic over the last 10 years or so.

our experience with Jr. Legion and showcase

Our son has played both. He was fortunate that he had an exceptional experience playing Jr. Legion. His team was made up entirely of kids from his high school, which provided those boys with an opportunity to play almost 30 games together over the summer. When they lost out in the state tournament, they were the only team left made up of kids from just 1 school. To G'man's point, this was good for our high school team. The Cary Bulls program is another outstanding example of Jr. Legion at its very best. They have a great program and they work hard to promote their players and help them improve as players and gain the exposure that others get through showcase. But not every area is fortunate to have a strong legion program (junior or senior) which means that players have to seek other opportunities to play at a higher level. Senior legion baseball in our area doesn't get competitive until you advance into playoff rounds, and even then it's sporadic. Our son's experience with showcase has been beneficial to him because it's allowed him to play with and against some of the best players in the state, and ultimately, in the nation. It's a matter of finding the situation (legion, showcase, etc) that works best for the player and the family.
