Long Live Legion

I know it's falling apart but I just wanted to thank everybody who attempts to keep legion baseball alive and well. Legion baseball IS summer baseball. It always has been and should always be. Let's see if we can outlast the current crazy of showcase ball. If you're good, you will be found. Play your me me me travel ball in the fall. Play for your Community and all those Legionaire's during the summer. It's just the right thing to do.

I used to be a huge supporter of legion ball and still like it. Showcase is where kids need to go if they want a look. My child played 3 years of legion and never got noticed and 1 fall with a showcase team got him several looks and offers. Out of the 90 games he played, I may have seen his high school coach 1 time and maybe a few college coaches. I wish the local schools and baseball coaches would support it a little more.

 

It all depends on the team/coach. I know of a local legion team who will play in 9 college parks this coming summer. If you can play, you will be found.

Stick to showcase in the fall. Play legion in the summer. What is so hard about that?

 

Carolina Angle, I understand what your saying, but actually what you did with your son is what I've said could be done all along. If you live in an area with a local legion team, let your son choose. If your son wants to play those 3 years with his friends for his community, let him. And then at any time during those 3 years, if dad is not satisfied with the recruiting process, you can always go do other things on your own after legion season (which ends for most teams usually first-mid July).

I agree that there are areas with no legion option, and there are areas with weak legion options,,, but there are also areas that still exist with strong legion programs. In Area III South, I realize we are fortunate, and not all areas are like this. Within 30 miles of each other, we have strong programs (Rowan, SRowan, Kann, Lex, Mville, Stanly, Davie, Con) which means even if your not having the best of years, these other programs have such rich legion traditions, that college coaches routinely frequent these games. I see/talk with them all the time.

Kids can do both. Actually it sounds like your son got the best of both worlds by playing with his friends for his community and then doing showcase in the fall.

 

TJ, you are absolutely correct about about the southern division, but the Northern is also steeped in tradition: Kernersville, Randolph county, Burlington, E. Randolph, High Point. In a little research I find his son played for one of the above. You are correct, both can co-exist (sp) and yes you can play Legion in the summer and fall showcase is when you can do exactly what it is called "showcase".

 

tools, agree about the Northern Division, great programs there also. The west also has several tradition-rich programs and a number of others who have gained steam in recent years trying to catch up. My comment about being fortunate is based on so many comments that I often hear about legion ball not being as popular in the east. Don't know that for sure, just seems most individuals who say "its dying" or unavailable are from the eastern half of NC.

 

In my opinion, the best blueprint of an overall great experience

 

tj, you would cry if you lived in the east. there's a few of us legion supporters left in the east, but you can just about count them on one hand. Coach Edwards with Durham Post 7 does about all he can do to revive it in the area but it's almost like fighting a losing battle.

Everyone in the east should experience a legion game in Cherryville, Shelby, Rowan County, Caldwell County, etc. before they go knocking it.

 

I couldn't agree more JM15. It's like pulling teeth to get players for Roxboro's Team. How many showcase events do players need to go to? Seems to me if you attend a couple most of the scouts have seen you, and therefore you don't need to keep attending them. But, I don't know because I have never been to a showcase tournament.
