Finally softball season is here! Time for the you make the call threads that I love.

Was watching a college game over the weekend and saw a call made that I hadn't seen before and have no idea what the right call is so here it goes...

Less than two outs, nobody on base (don't think either of these matter). Batter hits a little flare just past first base in foul teritory. 1st basewoman (it is softball! :)) turns and starts running. 1st base coach is trying to get out of her way and is still in the coaches box but 1st basewoman runs into her. It was very obvious that the 1st basewoman had no idea where the ball was (she actually admitted it) and wasn't even close to the ball.

What's the call? Will tell you what call was made on the field after we get a few responses.

Let me guess, the batter was called out because the coach interfered.

If coach is still in box then there is no call (foul ball)?

as long as the coach is in the box it should have been ruled a foul ball....

I have a feeling even though thats the correct call that wasnt what happened. Do tell....

The coach's box must be vacated if a player needs that space to make a play. If the coach interferes with a player attempting to catch a foul-fly in the coach's box, the batter is out and the ball is dead. No runners may advance or score.

    It's a judgement call.

I was under the impression that the coach was making the attempt to get out of the way???

    Batter was out

The coach was attempting to get out of the way but the field ump still called interference on the coach and the batter was out.

I understand what Braves stated but shouldn't the ump also realize that the 1st basewoman had no idea where the ball was (it was very obvious) and that if she did, she wouldn't have been anywhere near the coach?

Sounds like the first basewoman made a serious "heads up" play. Hmmm... I have no idea where the ball is so if I run over the coach the batter is out. Now that is some quick thinking there.

Doesn't matter. I'm not saying this is the correct call given the situation, but if a coach "attempts' to get out of the way and still interferes...it's still interference.
