As an extention to WndMllr's early Spring thread......

All the debate on kids hormones at the 16U/18U level, committment, academics, the overall dynamics of the sport, players, parents in general, I look over the propsed TB team(s) schedules and I see Spring State tournaments and such scheduled right smack in the middle of HS final exams.

You try and go to a team(s) and with some teams it's "we are not going to do much during SB because girls are practicing and playing 5 days a week and studing on weekends", or folks will tell you academics come first but they frown when you tell them you can't make a weekend because of school, or they tell you school is no excuse to miss a weekend, others tell you academics come first (no dead period for HS exams for TB), etc.

All the talk of how TB trys to work and respect the HS coaches, but they go and make these schedules in May and the beginning of June when girls are trying to finish strong academically at said time, not to mention State playoffs and the State Games.

You really want to play (and can) and at times you just seem to get no help or relief at all and folks sit around scratching their heads and wonder why really good athletes give the sport up.

I know that teams HAVE to get put together for the Summer, either whole or in parts....I guess....could people try and work together better and find a better balance?? The business end of it just seems to ruin it sometimes.

Scal, you nailed with your last sentence, tournament directors and such it is just a business to them. But we as coaches and parents need to be a little more responsible as well, particuarly with 16's and 18's, I cannot think of any reason for a kid who is planning on playing at the next level to play a showcase tournament before school is finished. Beginning the second weekend of June gives you plenty of time to be seen throughout the summer and fall.

I understand your concerns, but with spring high school softball, it really leaves the travel ball coaches very little time to get their team together and then get in qualifiers and get qualified for nationals. Most qualifiers are in June, giving teams a chance to plan and make arrangements for travel. There are just not enough weeks with out some overlap.

And then there are showcases. Girls MUST have time to showcase themselves to have a chance to get to the next level. Now one thing that girls in NC and SC do have is the fall, to do so, but still the BEST showcase time is June and July.

It could be worse. My daughter's roommate is from Iowa and their high school finals are in July. That is why she was never seen and had to go to a JUCO before she made it to D1.

I hear you, but the other thing that has cropped up is HS coaches adamant about being thin at certain positions and not allowing a kid to play TB until after HS is over.

You want to be loyal to the coach and kids who play on the HS team, and you want to play TB......you find yourself in really unusual circumstances to no fault of our own when the powers of TB and HS ball can not schedule or have a better working relationship in relation to 16U/18u.

I guess sometimes you just have to make a decision on priorities at the expense of being left out.

.....yes, HS coaches have to get their priorities in check.......wait, or are you saying that the kids need to get their priorities......wait, or are you saying that the TB coaches need to get their priorities in check?

LOL, its funny, but not in a good way that all of the above are true.

To me, if the parents and coaches will get their egos in check, ie apply some reasonable understanding of whats best for the kids, then that will be a happy day!

It can work if everyone will pull together.

TB v HS is like juggling bowling pins, if you add one too many or one that won't cooperate, you'll drop them all.
