I went to Statesville yesterday to watch my niece and her Blaze team play and was reminded to see what the girls eat, between games, with an hour to three hour break. I saw fruit, sandwiches, hamburgers, nachos with cheese, corn dogs etc.

I've seen posts on bats, make that call but I don't remember one on food. Coaches, parents what do you let your girls eat? Should a coach be able to tell their girls what to eat. In my limited experiences with tournament ball, it seem like most of the girls subscribe to the Babe Ruth diet of hot dogs and fries.

    Any ideas?

I'd say that would differ from girl to girl. I've known some who just nibble on fruit or nuts and others who would starve without a couple burgers, nachos or hotdogs and coke. I always figure no one knows what I want or like to eat at certain times so who am I to thnk that I or a coach knows what each girl wants or needs. Now if they are getting sick everytime they eat something before playing then they should be smart enough to figure that out but I've yet to see that as a problem with our girls

biscuits with honey and milk would be the "best" thing to eat if you are looking for energy replenishment at its quickest.

maybe the milk if you go whole

but honey is the quickest way to raise your blood sugar there is. physically it is basically half-digested sugarand is absorbed higher in the digestive tract than ANY other food.

...raising the blood sugar without understanding the downside is a no no. Maintaining blood sugar is more better. ( I've always wanted to write a "more better" blast ). Anyway, for what its worth, at one college that I know of, the players are not allowed, fried food ANYtime, no deserts and no sodas.

They get peanut butter, wheat thins, and pretzels with salt.

    Carb Up !!

The night before is more important then the day of. Always give athletes carbs the night before a game the next day. Pasta is the main source of carbs that kids will eat. A good ole Spaghetti dinner the night before would suffice most kids appetites. This gives the body time to absorb and change it to energy for the muscle and tissues to stay tuned up for the long hot day. Soft Drinks, Gatorade are some of the worse things you can give a kid because of the sugar content, it lays in the body and makes you sluggish as the day goes by. We make our kids consume 2 bottles of water at each game. One thing else you need to tell each kid to make sure they are hydrated. Even though you may feel uncomfortable saying this to them let the team mom say it. Check to see if your "P" is yellow and not clear if so you are dehydrated. Each kid should maintain her body working correctly. With dehydration the brain and coordination will not work together. Also you will see a decrease in productivity on the field of play...

An elite athlete eats for one reason only, and that is to fuel the body that they live and compete in. There is no difference in what this type of player puts into their body on a tournament weekend vs. a normal Tuesday school day.

I don’t personally believe that an athlete should eat carbs for energy on a particular day; I DO believe that balanced nutrition 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 365 days a year will keep an athlete on top of their game weather it is at school, practice, single game or championship game in a tournament.

Balanced nutrition is extremely difficult for younger kids and is a life decision. 14 year old DD told me (as she watched some team mates go to Chevy’s for a big lunch between games) that she didn’t understand why they were putting garbage into their gas tank before expecting their bodies to perform at the top level they would need in a couple of hours.

By the way, we had a scoop of ice cream on the way home, after losing the last game of the tournament.
