This is a nightmare of a problem that we haven't been able to get away from, for the last four years. We are looking forward to getting to highschool, next year, just to get away from this shameful practice. Parents don't seem to realize that, when they provide unmerited opportunities for their young athletes, there's no incentive to improve.

...and wreck ball, and travel ball (at all levels) and at some college programs.

the best advice I can give you is to just bite your tongue in HS (it doesn't matter anyways) and find a travel program that has little (if any) of this cancer. If you have a kid that is starting HS I would guess she is 13 or 14, so be SURE that you do your homework when looking for a team because daddy ball can hide well during tryouts. Talk to the coaches (all of them) and as many parents that you can find.

I can relate as my DD's high school coach has said, "all seniors who make the team will start and pick there positions to play, its there last year at the high school level and they should have something to remeber in later years." We have a 3rd baseman who is a senior and cannot reach 1st base on a throw, but thats the position she wanted to play. Needless to say, we are one of the worst teams in NC. Its frustrating. Glad my DD plays travel ball.

I know your frustration. My daughter tagged up on a caught foul ball and went home and our coach looked at her and said, "can you do that?".

You might be surprised at the number of coaches that don't know that particular rule. And even with the ones who do know that rule there are probably many who don't teach it until the opportunity is missed to use it.

As far as some of the coaching issues mentioned above, I wonder how many have been to the coach's AD with their concerns. If anyone with serious coaching credibility concerns hasn't personally, individually discussed it with the coach and/or AD then they may be part of the problem.

That may not solve the problem but if nothing is done to help educate the coaches, the problem won't get any better.

if your school administration would do the right thing and hire qualified coaches that were smart enough to get their own assistants and coach their own way then you would not have dads helping out.

i dont agree with a lot of what our high school coach does but for those 2 -3 months my DD belongs to her. i have to bite my tounge to keep from saying stuff and it doesnt always work. i still find myself saying "why no earth would you do that".

If your kid is playing then it doesnt matter is she bats behind daddys girl or not. if she is better than her then you cant hide that.

i follow stats but im the book keeper so its kind of my job but a high school stat is just something to make mom and dad pat themselves on the back. if this guy is fabricating stats to make his daughter look good then that will also show when a good coach sees her and ask "where is the girl we saw on paper".

dont worry about it.....or, do worry about it and tell him that you think he is stupid and that is boters you.....thats better than letting it bother you all season and talking about it in the stands thus causing a division in the stands:apeani:

It just seems like if it is your job to coach a high school team and you get paid to do it then you owe it to the program and the girls to know the rules...all of them. Our coach told the team he expects 100% commitment out of them yet he has missed four practices himself. I know I vent alot but my daughter who is a senior comes home from practice every day so frustrated and ill it is effecting all of us

    have you noticed that......

many, and I mean many coaches are leaving or being asked to leave hs because of the "parent" factor with all the pressure being put on the hs staff to play certain kids because of who their parents are, where their parents work or the threat of lawsuits due to coaches not playing their kids is way off the scale right now. in some cases it seems that the schools have decided that its easier to ask the coach to resign than face a bs lawsuit from an angry parent.

things are being taken to extremes by many parents to get their kids on the field, and they seem to be willing to do anything to achieve that, even if it hurts the team.

good, solid coaches are being replaced by people who do what they're told and play who they're told to play.

its not just softball, it crosses into all hs sports right now.

i know of 11 circumstances like this in the charlotte area. has anyone else had this happen in their area????

    just curious.....

If you run your program as you should there should be no reason a lawsuit would be successful. A lawsuit doesn't necessarily settle in a short period of time. By the time it dragged out the family would probably have come to their senses and become involved in something else down the road.

Also, has it ever been explained to anyone that lawsuits can be initiated from either party. And I'm sure the school system already has attorneys on retainer. I don't think the courts would be very pleased to decide who is on the bench and why.
