Just a list to show the different(and like) nicknames for our high schools. If your school is fairly new(15 years), please note if any attention was given to creativity by the powers-that-be to choose the nickname. In other words, was it simply a PC choice. Especially interested in unique nicknames. I'll start with the obvious for me, Rocky Mount Senior High Gryphons. This name, I am told, was chosen when the school system was integrated. Booker T. Washington's nickname was Lions, RMSH's nickname was Blackbirds. A Gryphon is a creature with a lion's body and an eagle's head so it was a good choice, although it could be viewed as PC. Rocky Mount's current conference consists of: Northern Nash Knights, Southern Nash Firebirds, Nash Central Bulldogs, Wilson Fike Golden Demons, and Wilson Hunt Warriors. In my view, our conference has 3 pretty good nicknames, and 3 run of the mill nicknames.

My first HS's nickname is the Rippowam Cadavers. I was told we were given that name by our coach. Obviously he didn't like the way we played.

Later I transferred to a school with the nickname the falcons---my self esteem soared!

Mavericks ( Mallard Creek ). When i was in High School our rivalry was the West Meck Indians who we absolutly hated in sports and the PC patrol made them change to Hawks. I my eyes, they would always be the Indians.

In HS we were the Comets. Rose has an interesting mascot name - the Rampants. I don't even know what that is.

the most interesting nickname is the washington pam pack. i think i know the story behind it but dont want to say the wrong thing. if someone associated with the school or someone who knows exactly where pam pack originated from would fill us in that would be great.

Who can't forget the Cary Imps?

Have heard its the only school with that mascot in the country but with a new school popping up every 8 minutes, who knows.

Paste this link and read a very interesting story. The 60's were great weren't they? Along with naming the mascot Artichokes the student body leaders actually tried to make the school colors Pink and Lime Green but that never happened.

When I played there we knew it was just a matter of time before the local paper couldn't resist any longer. We blew a 10 run lead and lost a league game back in 1978 and the headline read..................

    "CHOKES CHOKE"

Not a good day in my career. I don't remember if I played good or bad that day and it doesn't really matter. The headline was enough to turn my stomach.

    Scot History 101...

    Well, Ms Bonzway...

In the days when flags and banners were important to identify opposing elements in battle, King William I "the Lion" who lived from 1143 to 1214, adopted a heraldic device showing a rampant lion, the king of beasts, rearing up with three paws stretched out. This became the royal coat of arms in Scotland. The lion was also incorporated into the Great Seal of Scotland which was placed on all official documents.

When the royal coat of arms was being designed, the lion rampant was obviously incorprated, with the Latin motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" meaning "No one attacks me with impunity".

Now, that being said (and thus the mascot used at JH Rose), I have been told on ocassion that the two schools that were integrated during such time to created the one high school had mascots of Rams and Panthers. As was apparently the theme of the time, the two combined as a RamPant and the viciousness of the Scottish battling heritage was incorporated by borrowing the Rampant Lion.

Yes, it is uncommon. But thats what makes it perfectly perfect.

(Being of direct Scottish Heritage/Lineage myself)... Ever:leaving: seen Braveheart?
