The DH is one of your starters...

... therefore in High School Baseball he can re-enter just like any position player. The intent of the DH rule, the courtesy runner rule, etc... is to offer opportunities for kids to play.

Check this one out... DH is hitting for pitcher and has no speed on basepaths. Late in game, kill the DH, enter the pitcher and then put in a courtesy runner. You dont lose a pinch runner with that. Pitcher goes back out to pitch. When AB comes up, re-enter the DH, he gets on, re-enter the pitcher and then insert a courtesy runner... All legal!

I would need help on this one Coach. You said (and I thought) you "killed" the DH by entering the position player, in this case the pitcher, into the line-up. It was my thinking that once the DH is killed, you lose that option to have a DH. In your scenario, the DH is actually being re-entered to pitch, and then the pitcher re-enters after the AB. But how is it legal for the two players who were grouped together as DH/Position player in the line-up substituted for each other in the field?

Nice loophole in the NFHS rules.

I'm not sure some of these examples are right.....

According to the NFHS rule book, Rule 3, Section 1, Article 4

".....The role of the DH is terminated for the remainder of the game when:

    a) the defensive player, or any previous defensive player for whom the DH batted, subsequently bats, pinch-hits or pinch-runs for the DH, or

    b) the DH or any previous DH assumes a defensive position."

With that said, from the most previous example, once the pitcher is entered to run, with or without courtesy runner, the DH position is now dead and may not be used the rest of the way.

this is my point, once you remove the dh, you only have nine starters, you cannot reenter the dh again. now if you pinch hit for the DH, the original DH can reenter. But once the defensive player enters the game offensively, I dont see how the DH can reenter the game. The term "kill the DH" had to mean something.

Ok GBC good buddy....the following comes straight for the NCHSAA office

Luis is the DH and he is batting for Diesel who is playing first base. Luis reaches base in the 4th inning on a dying quail to center. Diesel enters to pinch run for Luis. At this point Luis' role as the DH is terminated. After the half inning is complete, Diesel goes back into the field as the first baseman. When the spot comes back up in the order in the 6th inning, Luis re-enters as a pinch-hitter for Diesel. This is Diesel's first time out of the game. This is Luis' one re-entry for the game. After the half inning is over, Diesel re-enters for Luis and plays first base. At this point Luis is finished for the game...........and is allowed to return back to Cuba.

(the names have been changed to protect the innocent but this is a real high school game situation that occurs quite often in games)

    names

Now Stretchy, you know you're supposed to use names out of the book when you're refering to a rule... you know the batting out of order names in the OBR:

Abel, Baker, Charles, Daniel, Edward, Frank, George, Hooker and Irwin.

They're all nice guys ... except for Hooker, don't hang out with him on the weekends.

Whew..thanks BDOC. Luis had no business playing in that scenario. And he definitely won't be pinch hitting for Diesel
