Ok, I have a question. According to the rule book any players that is in the game or has been in the game are inelegible to run as a courtesy runner. Here is the situation:

Team has 12 players. Want to use a courtesy runner for the catcher. They use a player in the game. On top of that they use her more than once in the inning for different players. Someone said something about last batter out..... rule. Well she had scored in that inning in her spot in the lineup and then ran for someone else but was not the last batter out and definitely not twice.

Is there a rule about using the last batter out, and am I wrong in that if there are subs that have not been in the game they must serve as courtesy runners? Thanks.

It did not cost us the game but I want to make sure I understand the rule.

Rule 8, Section 9 NFHS Rule Book

Article 1.. The team at bat may use a courtesy runner for the Pitcher and/or Catcher at any time. Neither the Pitcher nor the Catcher will be required to leave the game under such circumstances. The same courtesy runner may not run for both the Pitcher and Catcher any time during the game.

Article 2.. In the top of the 1st inning only, the Pitcher and the Catcher are identified as those listed on the lineup card.

Article 3.. Players who are currently in the game or have participated in the game in any other playing capacity are ineligible to serve a courtesy runners.

Article 4.. A player may not be a substitute for any player in the half inning that she ran as a courtesy runner. Exception: injury or disqualification

Article 5.. Courtesy runner may not run for the DP.

Article 6.. Once courtesy runner has been designated for that half inning, the Pitcher or Catcher for whom she is running may not return to run while that courtesy runner is on base.

Article 7.. A courtesy runner must be reported to the plate umpire.

**** There is no such thing in High School Softball about the last out running*****. That is definitely a violation of courtesy runner rules!

Thanks for the reply. I had read the rules and understood but some people keep telling me that individual states can "vote" in other rules, yet no one can tell me how to find a copy. I am beginning to think more and more that these umps are "mixing and matching" rules from several different governing associations. Again thanks for the help.

The last out rule I thought was more of just a little league and recreation rule.

There is no single policy for Courtesy Runners in "Travel ball." Each rule set is different:

NSA: "The player in the batting order where the last out was recorded or any player not currently in the game..."
"A player can be used only once per inning as a courtesy runner."

ASA: "only players who have not been used in the game can be used." However, the TD may elect to allow the last out in non-qualifier tournaments.

ISA: No courtesy runner in Fast Pitch, however there is the Base Bandit (BB): "THE BASE BANDIT/BASE BURGLAR is allowed to run once an
    inning."

NFHS: is the same as ASA. Some "travel leagues" use NFHS rules.

WFC: "Courtesy runners for catchers and pitchers are the last out or a substitute."

Base Bandit! Now that's funny! I hope they would be running for someone already on base; not just be allowed to run from the dugout and burgle a base. Although that would be exciting on a wild pitch!

Always be courteous when applying courtesy to the courtesy runner rule because being courteous affects the effect!
